Manchester United have confirmed that Adam Lawrence has sealed a return to the club to coach the Under-21s.

Successful at United

Lawrence initially joined United in 2021 as under-16s coach. He was subsequently promoted to head of player development for the Under 13 to Under 16 age groups.

He performed well, prompting United to appoint him at the helm of the Under-18s in 2023.

Under Lawrence, United Under-18s transformed into a formidable group, culminating in them winning the treble in 2023/2024.

His attractive, attacking and entertaining style of play earned high praise from both the manager and the club’s promising young talent.

Lawrence parted ways with United last summer. He moved to Premier League rivals Newcastle to manage their Under-21s.

However, he only lasted four months, with United now confirming Lawrence has returned to Old Trafford.

United Edition Lawrence Statement

United announced earlier on Wednesday, “Manchester United have appointed Adam Lawrence as head coach of the Under-21s until the end of the season.”

“The Under-21 head coach role became available when Travis Binnion joined the first-team coaching staff earlier this month.”

The statement further reads: “Darren Fletcher will remain head coach of the Under-18s and will now also take on additional responsibilities leading the professional development phase (Under-17-Under-21) for the remainder of 2025/26.”

According to the Manchester Evening NewsBoth Lawrence and United view the appointment as mutually beneficial.

Lawrence is highly regarded at United and is understood to still live in Manchester with his family, keeping any potential disruptions to a minimum.

United Under-21s are back in action on Monday evening when they take on West Bromwich Albion in Premier League 2.

The Under-18s, on the other hand, are set to head to Middlesbrough on Saturday, February 7.
