For two weeks of 2026, two dueling bands ruled the airwaves in the sneaker world: Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year/Year of the Horse. Nearly every major footwear player has chimed in on one or both initiatives, and in Nike’s corner there are already two EXT variants of the Nike Kobe 8, one with a more creative application with blue/purple gradient soles, and one more literally with a black pony hair upper.

However striking these new developments are, we should not lose sight of their creator. Delivered in 2014 when the Zodiac Calendar last hit the equestrian market, the Nike Kobe 8 “Year of the Horse” was tipped to hit shelves again months earlier. Now that the official images have been loaded from Beaverton, the stunning style matches that arrangement, complete with its crimson overtones, gilded accents and brushed mesh patterns. As seen in the photos below, this Protro Edition breaks away from what fans originally received by adding elementary school dimensions. On a more detailed level, this Retro stamps itself with the text “2026” on the elastic bands right below the collar, divided in half by the ever-present Sheath logo.

The Nike Kobe 8 Protro “Year of the Horse” is expected to release on January 31st, with a sticker price of $180 in adult sizes. Again, a GS pair is pictured below – keep that in mind as you get a sense of this bring-back colorway.
