Odyssey is addressing one of the barriers to “zero torque” with its latest Square 2 Square release.
The trendy putting method has received a lot of attention in recent years, but many players still shy away from the typical center-shaft and onset designs due to their unfamiliarity.
But with the new S2S Tri-Hot line, Odyssey has taken the axis of the shaft and moved it forward, bringing the shaft closer to the leading edge of the putter, but still passing through the putter’s center of gravity to give it toe-up characteristics.
In addition to the new configuration, the putters feature a new Ai-Dual insert, the next version of Callaway’s Ai-designed face inserts introduced two years ago with the Ai-One line.
Keep reading below to learn more about the new S2S Tri-Hot putter line and my thoughts on the new release.
What are Odyssey S2S Tri-Hot putters?
The new S2S Tri-Hot putters are unmistakable on a putting green with a new red and black color scheme that harkens back to the brand’s colors.
“As we say in the building, our product has to be ‘DSPD,’” Callaway Callaway vice president of product strategy Jacob Davidson told GOLF. “That’s demonstrably superior and pleasingly different. We felt like getting that red and black – it would be something visible on TV – it’s true to Odyssey.

The putters are offered in three different popular Odyssey head shapes – No. 7, Rossie and Jailbird, which are also available in a 38″ Cruiser configuration – but the next thing you’ll notice is the location of the front axle compared to other low-torque putter options.
Davidson said this allows the putters to be played without allowing the shaft to lean, which has been one of the barriers to low-torque putters for many players. Now you can have a low-torque putter but keep your hands in a traditional position.
To achieve this, Odyssey used a three-piece construction – reintroducing the Tri-Hot name – with more than 140 grams of tungsten in the putter’s front section and a lightweight aluminum rear section. The insert and tungsten are covered by a steel housing to which the shaft is attached.
The putters also feature a new Ai-Dual insert, which is designed using artificial intelligence with a dual-layer urethane insert with a soft outer layer and a firm inner layer. The grooves have also been redesigned with a more aggressive 19˚ slope.

To complete the builds, Odyssey is also introducing a new, heavier and stiffer SL120 shaft based on player feedback and a new pistol plus grip that was developed when Odyssey noticed players were overwhelmingly using larger grips.
Who are Osyssey S2S Tri-Hot putters for?
This is a common theme with recent low-torque putter releases, but S2S Tri-Hot putters will do a great job for the player who wanted to get into a low-torque putter but was hesitant due to its unconventional features.
While still a center-shaft putter, the new Tri-Hots are much more like regular putters at address, with the shaft much closer to the face (there’s still a bit of onset), and can be stroked just like a regular putter.
The feel is also a lot more responsive than the original Ai-One insert.

My thoughts!
There was a lot of hype when the S2S Tri-Hots first appeared on pro tours a few weeks ago and after rolling the putters myself, I get it
As someone who traditionally doesn’t like mallets, I’m drawn to the smallest shape, the Rossie, and have found that I don’t have to make any of the adjustments to my setup that I do for other low-torque putters. I don’t make any adjustments to my hand position or forward pressure and I don’t have to play the ball as far forward.
Larger grips also work really well on low-torque putters to help someone like me, who has years of muscle memory on toe release, keep my hands still and the putter naturally square. I’m glad to see that Odyssey simply put the kind of grip on a putter that people were already putting on it.

I’ve never really been a fan of synthetic material inserts because they have that plasticky feel and sound that seems cheap to me. This one is different because it keeps a soft feel that I like, but is more responsive. Additionally, the new grooves seem to produce great roll indoors (I haven’t had a chance to test outdoors yet). The price ($550) may be surprising for an Odyssey putter, but this putter certainly feels premium.
Finally, I think there is a lot to build on this release. During my interview with Davidson I pointed out that the front pieces of the three different models are very similar. Theoretically, it seems like you can just create new back pieces and create all kinds of different shapes from the platform.

Odyssey Tri-Hot Square 2 Square #7 custom putter
We moved Zero Torque Forward. Odyssey’s new line of S2S TRI-HOT putters is a revolution in the “Zero Torque” category. By using multi-material construction, we have been able to move the center of gravity of these putters far enough forward to get the shaft into the clubhead on the topline, eliminating the need for shaft lean and thus eliminating one of the biggest entry barriers to this style of putter. Forward Center of Gravity and Hosel Position By moving the center of gravity forward, we were able to position the Hosel spud on the topline, much closer to the face than typical “Zero Torque” putters, for a more natural, intuitive and comfortable setup position. Multi-Material Construction By strategically using aluminum, steel and over 140 grams of tungsten, we were able to design a “Zero Torque” putter with over 80% of its weight below the topline and taking into account our forward center of gravity and hosel position. New FRD Groove This new Forward Roll Design Groove is deeper and more aggressive. With a 19° slope, it works with the dual-ply design to improve forward roll up and down the face.
