Normally, any title fight where a reigning champion is competing in the event will have a small (c) next to the title holder’s name in the results section below. That doesn’t apply to Oktagon 79, however, as despite entering Fight Week as Oktagon MMA Welterweight Champion, Ion Surdu found himself stripped of his title prior to the event.
After doctors stopped his weight cut, Surdu came in at 178 pounds on Friday, more than eight pounds over championship weight. As a result, only challenger Andrej Kalašnik remains eligible to win the title, which will remain vacant should Surdu be victorious in the fight itself.
Talk about Halloween havoc. Surdu will have to pay the full 50% of his wallet in the form of a fine, and that wasn’t the only carnage on the scales on Friday. Radek Roušal missed the featherweight limit by two pounds, coughing up 20% of his wallet.
