Nuno Espirito Santo has said West Ham have the quality to avoid relegation but must correct the ‘unacceptable’ mistakes that have contributed to the club’s worst ever start to the season.
West Ham are 19th in the Premier League and have won just one of their opening nine games. Nuno is yet to record a win in three games since replacing Graham Potter in charge at the London Stadium.
The Hammers suffered a 2-1 defeat at Leeds United on Friday evening after early goals by Brenden Aaronson and Joe Rodon condemned the club to a third successive league defeat. West Ham are three points clear of safety after playing a game more than 17th-placed Burnley.
Despite their terrible start and ‘a lot of problems’, Nuno is confident his side have the tools to escape the bottom three.
“Unfortunately, there are many problems in our club. It is not up to us to hide behind the problems. Everyone must be alive and do much more and be in the right position,” he said at full-time.
“We didn’t have to deal with our defensive situations and I felt like we needed a striker to keep the ball, so maybe that’s not the best of me.
“These kinds of mistakes are unacceptable in the Premier League.
“There is quality, there is time, but nothing will happen if we don’t change.
“We have to change our attitudes, we have to change the way we approach things, we have to commit better, prepare better and work harder.
“All things – that’s the reality. We don’t expect things to change on their own. Realizing that we have time can be a mistake if we don’t change things quickly.”
