Rowing figures released during the week indicate that racing in the racing is going in the right direction.
For the month of July compared to last year, Gryhound Racing had risen by 9.7% ($ 8.7 million), Thoroughbred Racing 13.3% ($ 26.7 million) and Harnas racing 25.9% ($ 11.0 million).
Seven Harness Racing meetings were held this season compared to last season and the turnover numbers reflect both tab and betcha platforms.
The good news does not end there.
Last Friday evening, Addington fell $ 1.1 million with the average turnover per race $ 10,000, while Auckland who raced on the same night spent $ 645,000 spent.
“What we start to see year after year is the impact of Friday Night Lights. If you look as an example last Friday evening, the bet between the two metro clubs was more than twenty -one percent on the same Friday evening last year,” said Brad Steele CEO of HRNZ.
He is also encouraged by the success of the recently completed southern peak that culminated in $ 25,000 finals for rating horses in Gore last Sunday.
“Mainly it was a downtime (July for the southern region) with 60 to 70 starters and modest turnover. The number of starters in heats and finals more than doubled what we experienced last year. We had Fuller Fields, the racing was competitive, we had six track records and gamblers.”
Gore’s turnover was $ 770,000 – an increase of 120%, with four extra races.
Although the initiative kept horses further in the winter, some expect that figures will not be that strong in the coming month or two.
“You would expect that some of the figures would fall away, but last weekend I spoke with a number of trainers in Gore and they said they had a few horses who hung there to endure the last series. They also said they had other horses who would probably take the place on the horses that go to the Paddock.”
The increase in bet of the bet also begins to display the recently adopted government legislation that prohibits overseas bookmakers to accept betting of gamblers established in New Zealand.
“I had a Ladbrokes account until lately. I am one of that of the legislative one that has been influenced. I am now compliant and bet on the tab,” he said.
Steele says that the number of new customers has risen by twenty percent and that the average bet is also higher.
With better horses and races that will start for spring and summer, he is convinced that the upward gambling trends will continue.
“We are approaching that time when the better horses start to appear again and there are qualifying races for the cup. There is also improved media attention and that leads to the World Drivers Championship. There will be more eyeballs on racing.”
Steele is hopeful that with the growth of the harness racing, extra dollars can be available for things such as bets and other industrial initiatives.
“I think that may be possible in the next twelve months.”
While gambling on armor racing is decreasing worldwide, New -Zealand takes on the trend.
“In Australia I think they are falling around seven percent and America is also down. I think the only two areas of law that have had fairly healthy gambling growth are new -Zeeland and France.”
Steele confirmed that HRNZ will have a new breeding allocation for release on Friday 5one September.
“It is a new initiative that we have been working on for a while. That is the last of the most important announcements at this stage.”
