Valentin Vacherot was on the outskirts of tears on Tuesday when he went to his first ATP Masters 1000 quart final on the Rolex Shanghai Masters.
The first Monegasque player who reached a quarterfinals at tour level in history, the Vacherot qualifying match drove Tallon Griekspoor with 4-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4 after a chaotic, two-hour and 22-minute battle that ended 10 minutes before 1 am.
“It means everything,” said Vacherot unbelieving. “I don’t think I could really realize what I was doing all week and it all touched me when I just won this competition. I was just happy all week, but not out of the roof and this one is incredible.”
“As much emotion as I only think of the difficult times I had last year, even this year. Just to share that with my coach, brother, my girlfriend – it is incredible and I currently experience one of the best times in my life.”
Vacherot went into number 204 in the world the week, with only one win in his career at an ATP Tour event, after he reached the second round of his home tournament, this year’s Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters. Thanks to his run in Shanghai, Vacherot was shot up to number 130 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings. The 26-year-old, who scored forty winners against Griekspoor, is the lowest placed quarter-finalist in the history of Shanghai.
“This is 100 percent the reward, spent six months in the bank last year [due to injury]Said Vacherot, who has driven out three placed players in a row: 14th series of Alexander Bublik, 20th series of Tomas Machac and 27th Set Griekspoor.
“Fortunately I was able to play freely since January. That was incredible. I had a nasty fall at Wimbledon in the [qualifying] First round I was a few points away from the victory. I’m not going to lie, I thought I would be out again for a few months. They were only a few weeks. This is now the reward for everything I have experienced. ”
Vacherot will then meet the 10th seed Holger Rune. When he was asked about his upcoming match, Vacherot said: “I don’t even know who I play, I don’t look at the draw.”
Vacherot’s cousin, Arthur Rindernech, also lives in the tournament. The Frenchman, who made Alexander Zverev on Monday, is opposed to the fifteenth series Jiri Lehecka on Wednesday. Vacherot and Rindernech both studied at Texas A & M University, where they shared two seasons together (2016, 2017).
Since 2022, Vacherot’s half -brother, Benjamin Balleret, has been his full -time coach.
