NPCI arm signs MoU with NTT Data Japan to enable UPI payments

NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), the international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NTT DATA Japan, a core subsidiary of the NTT DATA Group, for a strategic alliance towards adoption of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in the Japanese market.

NTT DATA Japan operates CAFIS, the largest card payment processing network in Japan, serving acquirers, issuers, merchants and ATM operators nationwide. Through this agreement, NIPL and NTT DATA Japan will jointly assess and work on UPI adoption at NTT DATA-acquired retail locations across Japan.

More than 2 lakh Indian visitors traveled to Japan between January and August 2025, an increase of 36 percent compared to the same period in 2024. After the introduction of UPI in the Japanese market, Indian tourists will be able to make payments at retail locations acquired by NTT DATA by scanning QR codes using their trusted UPI applications.

Ritesh Shukla, MD & CEO, NIPL, said, “The MoU with NTT DATA lays the foundation for enabling UPI adoption in Japan. This partnership is an important step towards improving the digital payment experience for Indian travelers and simplifying cross-border payments. It also reflects our ambition to take UPI to more international markets and establish it as one of the most trusted digital payment systems in the world.”
