Not Jacquet: Liverpool complete deadline day business

Liverpool have completed transfer deadline day by agreeing to terminate James McConnell’s loan from Ajax, with the Dutch club confirming that the administrative process has now been completed and the midfielder has been away from the first-team squad for weeks.

While there are a lot of names being thrown around late in the window, this is a clear, confirmed piece of business on deadline day.

Statement from the Ajax club website makes the timeline quite explicit, and it also helps explain why this is framed as a formal ending rather than a simple “he’s not playing” situation.

“Ajax, James McConnell and Liverpool FC have reached an agreement to formally terminate the player’s loan.

“The administrative process has been completed and the player himself has not been part of the Ajax selection since the beginning of January.

“The 21-year-old defensive midfielder’s contract with Ajax originally ran until the end of the current season… He played a total of seven official matches for the Ajax first team.”

Liverpool have now brought the 21-year-old back into our control, opening the door for a reset between now and the summer, rather than letting the situation drag on until May.

McConnell, who was rated favorably by Arne Slot and the academy staff, headed to the Netherlands this summer in hopes of getting higher minutes and accelerating his development in a different environment.

This move always came with a bit of risk, as a young defensive midfielder needs rhythm, confidence and repeated chances to learn from mistakes. Those things can quickly disappear if a club changes direction mid-season.

John Heitinga’s departure from Ajax clearly hasn’t helped, as even if the original plan was to give the English youngster a runway, that kind of continuity is usually the first thing to go when the coaching staff is replaced.

Slot’s own comments during the last campaign showed Liverpool were thinking carefully about McConnell’s trajectory, and the manager sounded like someone who was assessing the player but wanted the next step to be the right one.

“There’s certainly one who won’t be loaned out – and I think you know which one I’m talking about: James McConnell.

“I wouldn’t say for sure, but I really liked him today… He impressed me a lot today.”

The numbers underline why this spell never really took off in competitive terms, because the sample size is so small that it’s hard to draw anything other than “limited opportunities.”

Here is McConnell’s 2025/26 Eredivisie production for Ajax, via player.

That profile doesn’t scream failure so much as it suggests the season has become a stop-start learning curve, and Liverpool’s decision to end the loan early is a fairly logical attempt to salvage the second half of the season.

An update last month pointed in this direction anyway, with the suggestion that Liverpool were considering a recall because the midfielder was not getting the consistent run a 21-year-old needs.

“The 21-year-old is ‘likely to be recalled’ to Anfield in January after falling out of favor in Amsterdam”

If there is another loan, it should be based on weekly football rather than prestige. The quickest way for McConnell to get back into Slot’s thinking is to play regular 90 minutes and show that his best qualities can hold up in senior football.
