Not Flames’ Nazem Kadri First Trade Rumor Rodeo

If you’re a hockey fan, you’ve heard it a hundred times by now: Nazem Kadri’s name keeps popping up in trade rumors. And it’s not just whispers. When a veteran center hits the market with his experience, every contender needs at least a spot on the big-name list.

Kadri is an interesting example because of its history

What makes Kadri interesting and a little different than what you think most players would feel is the way he actually talks about it.

He didn’t avoid the question on The FAN Hockey Show. Kadri Actually, he said the conversation doesn’t faze him. He is not “one foot out the door.” Nor does he wonder if the Flames have already decided he’s gone. He’s focused right now on competing, on giving 110 percent in every shift – and that attitude tells you that a lot of about the kind of professional he is.

And that is the first reason he is different: Kadri does not allow himself to be pressured by rumor mills. Most players will admit, at least privately, that hearing your name mentioned during transactions — especially when your team is struggling — can get under your skin. You wonder if management still sees you as part of the plan, or if you’re just a chip that needs to be moved. Kadri acknowledges the chatter, but doesn’t let it disrupt his daily focus.

Nazem Kadri was involved in the Montreal Canadiens trade rumors.

This isn’t Kadri’s first rodeo with a no-move clause

Secondly, Kadri has been through this before. He is not new to travel, expectations, pressure and change in the big leagues. He has previously been in contract turmoil with the Toronto Maple Leafs, eventually agreeing to waive his no-move clause. That choice turned out to be the best one for him.

That choice led to a Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche and a solid new contract with the Flames. Those experiences give him a perspective that most guys never get.

Third, his contract situation is unique. He used to have a full no-movement clause, but that protection is no longer complete. He now has a 13-team no-trade list. That means he still controls where he can go and vetoes teams on that list. That changes the whole dynamic. He is not powerless in this process, which helps explain why he is relaxed about the rumors rather than confused by them.

Does Kadri resent having his name in the trade rumor mix?

So is he conflicted about hearing his name? Maybe a little; everyone would be. On the one hand, it’s flattering when contenders are interested. On the other hand, it reminds you of how little control players sometimes have.

But Kadri’s attitude says something bigger. He’s a professional, which means he’s all about today’s game, not today’s headlines. His history of success when he was traded makes him one of the more interesting veterans to watch as the deadline approaches.
