Not clicking at comedy club: Kunal Kamra stirs new row with T-shirt mocking RSS

Comedian Kunal Kamra has once again courted controversy after posting a photo on social media in which he can be seen wearing a T-shirt that allegedly mocked the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The post provoked a strong response from the BJP, which on Tuesday warned of possible police action.

In light of the earlier controversy, when the comedian faced backlash for his criticism of Eknath Shinde, Kamra clarified in his latest post that the photo referencing the RSS was ‘not clicked in a comedy club’. However, it should be noted that the entire ‘R’ is not visible in the image, and the lettering on Kamra’s T-shirt might as well read ‘PSS’.

Maharashtra minister and senior BJP leader Chandrashekhar Bawankule said authorities would take action against anyone sharing ‘objectionable’ content online.

“Police would take action against anyone who posts such objectionable posts,” he said in response to Kamra’s post on Monday, which featured a T-shirt with the image of a dog and a reference to the RSS, the BJP’s ideological mentor.

Sanjay Shirsat, a Shiv Sena cabinet minister whose party is allied with the BJP, said the RSS should respond strongly to the comedian’s post.

Shirsat said Kamra has previously made critical comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

“Earlier, he targeted Prime Minister Modi and Eknath Shinde, and now he has dared to attack the RSS directly. The BJP must respond to this,” Shirsat opined.

“We (Shiv Sena) have responded (to Kamra’s critical comments about Shinde earlier this year). Now he has mustered the courage to make an objectionable post against the RSS,” the minister said.

Earlier, in March, Kamra faced criticism for criticizing Shinde, who heads the Shiv Sena. During his show, Kamra adapted the lyrics of a popular Hindi film song to mock Shinde’s political career.

Following these comments, Shiv Sena members vandalized the Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai’s Khar area, as well as a hotel where the club is located.

However, BJP leaders have condemned the post and described it as insulting and provocative.
