A striking art gallery-style Northcote home, which has the suburb’s price record of $6 million, is ready for a new owner.

The four-bedroom house at 5 Ross St, described as one of the most outstanding properties in the area, last sold in 2022.

Nelson Alexander partner Charlie Barham said the house was designed by Ola Architecture Studio and construction was completed in 2017.

“It is rare to see a house of this scale and sculptural quality in Northcote,” Mr Barham said.

“The sense of volume, the amazing natural light and the precise details give it a bold look with so much real wow factor.”

An architect designed the house around the original owners’ “love of pure materiality and sleek aesthetics,” Mr Barham added.

“The intention was to create a minimalist backdrop that could function almost as a gallery for their art collection – a space where the architecture and artwork could quietly complement each other.”

The downstairs living room has high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows and the steel staircase, a type of staircase with a sloping beam to support the steps.

“The owners have commented on the abundant natural light that fills the space, the afternoons spent in the pool in summer and the warmth of the fire on a cold winter day,” Mr Barham said.

“They also love the location and say it feels incredibly central, whilst still being surrounded by beautiful trees, which gives a real sense of escape.”

A diverse mix of buyers inspected the home.

“We have had families across the north looking to expand, some from just a few hundred meters south in Fitzroy North and Clifton Hill, recognizing the value this level of design would have in that suburb,” Mr Barham said.

“There has also been interest from downsizing companies moving from across town to be closer to family up north, looking for a home that still offers size, scale and architectural presence, but requires little maintenance compared to more historic homes.”

Submission of expressions of interest closes on Tuesday 11 November at 5pm.
