Noa Noa’s diary and other adventures. The universe of Gauguin is told in Rome – Rome – Arte.it

On March 23, 1891, Gauguin greeted the symbolistic friends in a banquet chasted by Mallarmé and on April 4 he left for Marseille where on 24 April the ship for Tahiti waited for him where he would “repair the character and light of the region”.

From 6 September to 26 January, these and other trips from the artist will be performed in the Historical Museum of the Infantry of Rome, where more than a hundred works, including drawings, lithographs and diary pages, will reveal the most intimate side of the master of post-impressionism. “Gauguin. The Diary of Noa Noa and other adventures” He will return the trips of the artist to the Polynesian Islands, including woodcuts, lithographs and diary pages. More than a hundred works will open the doors of its symbolic and spiritual universe, with a focus on the relationship with Van Gogh.
Visitors get in the creativity of the master and get the chance to get his travels and reflections back through the pages of the diary written in 1893, after the first stay in Tahiti.
The woodcuts, printed by his friend Daniel de Monfreed, will tell his life on the Polynesian islands, explore ancient myths and beliefs, and also bring the fascinated gaze back to an exotic world that the artist has deeply inspired. The admiration for Polynesian culture is deposited on the canvas of Gauguin symbolism, spirituality, intense colors.
One of the most intriguing works that can be seen is the Monotype design “Study of Arms, Hands And Feet”, saved by the artist before the Polynesian religious authorities ordered the interest of his possessions.
To enrich the journey, there will be a series of lithographs taken from the book “Avant et après”, flanked by the personal notebook full of sketches, notes, sketches of characters and animals, but also “accounting” notes with regard to the paintings sold, exchanged or given.
There will be a focus on the relationship with Vincent van Gogh, of which twelve color lithographs will arrive in the capital, as well as on dialogue with various colleagues of that time, including Émile Bernard.
