Nishikori withdraws from US Open, Split announces with coach Johansson

Kei Nishikori has withdrawn from the US Open, the former number 4 player in the PIF ATP ranking list announced on Wednesday.

“Hello fans, unfortunately I will not be ready for the US Open. I have taken an MRI from my back and it is not yet 100 percent healing,” wrote the 35-year-old on X. “Hard work to be back on the court soon. Thanks for the support.”

Nishikori, who reached the US Open -Final in 2014 before he fell to Marin Cilic, also revealed that he ended his partnership with coach Thomas Johansson. The former Australian Open champion joined the Nishikori team in 2024 and played a key role in his comeback season.

The Japanese star has fought in recent years against a series of injuries, including hip surgery in 2022 that loved the ATP tour between 2021 and 2023. His return next to Johansson was recognized last year when he was nominated for the ATP Comeback Player of the Year Award.

“I just wanted to let you know that Kei and I decided to go separate ways,” Johansson wrote on Instagram. “It was a pleasure to work with such a professional team and with such a nice and talented player like Kei. I want to wish Kei and his team [the] Good luck for the future. ”

This season, Nishikori withdrew from his second round collision with Karen Khahanov in Geneva and later withdrew from Roland Garros before returning to Cincinnati with a loss of the opening round. However, he still has to recover from his back injury and is not ready to make his first performance at the US Open since 2021.

Nishikori has a record of 10-10 touring level in 2025, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.
