A wooden church tucked away in a legendary Bohemian village in the Byron hinterland is for sale after a vibrant makeover.
Originally built as a Methodist church a century ago before becoming a Uniting church, the unique property at 90 Cullen Street, Nimbin, has undergone a radical personality change in recent years.
The building is now known as the Waterman Church and has served as a communal space for workshops, lectures and meetings since 2023.
Events held at the church include musical performances, poetry competitions, yoga and meditation sessions, drumming lessons and winter solstice celebrations.
The name harkens back to the Aquarius Festival, a 1973 arts and music event described as Australia’s answer to Woodstock.
The event attracted thousands of festival goers to the small town in northern NSW, galvanized Australia’s hippie movement and put Nimbin on the map as a hub for alternative lifestyle practitioners.

The wooden church, which now has a vibrant lemon yellow color scheme, is for sale for $580,000, making it cheaper than a small apartment in a capital city.
It’s also lower than Nimbin’s median home price of $715,000, which is up 4.4% over the past year, according to PropTrack data.

Despite the modest surface area of 87 m2, the interior feels spacious thanks to the high vaulted ceilings and the open layout.
The benches have been reorganized from the traditional row configuration to create a gathering space in the center of the venue.
Polished wooden floorboards continue, while arched windows line the walls, giving the space a calm, airy feel.

It also features a kitchenette, while a separate outbuilding has two toilets, making the site also suitable for gatherings.
The 1055 m² block is fully fenced and includes landscaped gardens and lawns, creating a tranquil green space around the building.
The flexible zoning plans for RU5 Village allow for residential, community or small-scale creative uses, subject to City Council approval.

Selling agent Uri Ross said the property had already attracted a lot of interest, including from both locals and buyers from south-east Queensland.
“They come from across the border to where life moves a little slower,” he said.
Mr Ross said Nimbin’s property market has heated up in recent years.
“Houses in the city or small areas outside the city are flying off the shelves.”
