Nico Harrison and Mavericks have not discussed a contract extension

Nico Harrison and the Dallas Mavericks have not had discussions about a contract extension, sources told ESPN’s Tim MacMahon. Harrison has two seasons left on his contract.

During the final minute of the Mavericks’ 117-107 loss to the Washington Wizards, a “Fire Nico!” A chant broke out at the American Airlines Center. The chant became somewhat common last season after the Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.

But the Mavericks won the lottery in May with the right to draft Cooper Flagg in June, bringing new life and optimism to the fan base. With the Mavericks losing a pair of home games to start the season, their previous frustrations resurfaced.

Jason Kidd signed a multi-year contract extension with the Mavericks during the preseason after being considered a candidate for the New York Knicks head coaching vacancy in June.

‘I think they have the right to vent, but there is patience [needed]Kidd said. “It’s a different team, it’s a new team. We’re just starting to understand each other. We continue to learn from each other. So I would say be patient, but I understand the frustration. We all want to win. We all want to compete at a high level, but it is a game of expression and fans have the right to express themselves. But that won’t stop us from coming to work tomorrow, getting better and getting ready for Sunday [against the Toronto Raptors].”

Flagg said he did not hear the chants calling for Harrison’s termination, adding that he was “locked in the game.”

In April, MacMahon reported that Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont wanted to hire an experienced basketball executive to work with Harrison.
