Insolenta wins by more than 10 lengths ahead of old Casse assistant
HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Nick Tomlinson, a former assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse, saddled Insolenta for a 10 ¼ length victory at Gulfstream Park on Friday, earning his first win since going out on his own.
insolent ($5.40), a 4-year-old daughter of More Than Rady who finished second in her previous race as Tomlinson’s first starter, was claimed from Race 4, a maiden winner of $12,500.
“It’s a little bittersweet. She was claimed. You never want to lose them, but I’m happy with the win,” said the 31-year-old Toronto native, who worked for Casse for 10 years in South Florida.
Tomlinson, whose father worked at Woodbine, started working out the back there at age 13 for trainer Peter Berringer weekends and summers. (“Sometimes I skipped school, but my father doesn’t know that.”)
“I went to work for Malcolm and Sally Pierce, who really gave me my start. They let me become a traveling assistant and then I went to work for Mark for the last ten years,” Tomlinson said. “It was a great ride.”
Tomlinson has one horse left after losing Insolenta via the claims box.
“But we want to get active at the Championship Meet. I’ve reached out to a number of owners interested in claiming this winter. It might be a little slow at first,” said Tomlinson, who will work at Palm Meadows, Gulfstream’s satellite training facility in Palm Beach County.
