While the Giants get their management research underway after the recent resignation of Bob Melvin, Jon Heyman of the New York Post Reports that catcher Nick Hundley is “Strong in the mix” for the job. It is unclear whether Hundley has currently interviewed for the position, but the fact that his name has emerged so clearly is nevertheless remarkable.
Hundley, 42, was a big league -catcher for parts of 12 seasons and served as the primary backup of the Giants Buster Posey For the 2017 and ’18 seasons. After serving under Posey as part of the team’s tandem, it seems that Posey is interested in bringing in Hundley to serve as his manager now that he has become the president of the San Francisco’s Baseball Operations. Hundley immediately jumped into an off-the-field role at the League when announcing his retirement in 2020, when he became senior director of baseball activities at the commissioner’s office.
He spent two years in that role before he left the competition office to enter into a job in the Rangers organization, where he serves as a special assistant of President of Baseball Activities Chris Young. Hundley won a World Series in the organization in 2023, and during that Play-Off Run was actually a candidate to manage the Giants when the then President of Baseball Activities Farhan Zaidi wanted to replace Gabe Kapler In the dugout. At the time it was reported that Hundley had taken himself out of consideration before he received an interview for considerations. He had spoken with both Zaidi and Posey himself about the role before he made that decision, however, which indicates that he was at least a level of interest.
Without confirming an interview, it is not necessarily a lock that Hundley would accept the possibility to interview if they are offered in view of his earlier decision to refuse that invitation. Having said, it is quite possible that all the concerns that Hundley had about the back in the grind and journeys involved in a management role has resolved itself in the past two years, or even that the idea of reporting directly to a former teammate as Posey has sufficient attraction to involve him in the process again. It is also worth noting that Heyman has made it clear “No guarantees” To land the position, even in case he has changed thoughts about his desire to manage.
Whatever the case with regard to the candidacy of Hundley, he is far from the only person with the giants about their supervisor. Former All-Star and Longtime Oakland A’s Catcher Wolf Suzuki It is known that it interviewed for the position.
