Nice 1-5 Marseille: Greenwood brace sends visitors to top of Ligue 1 – Football News

Mason Greenwood scored twice as Marseille defeated Nice 5-1 at Allianz Riviera to go top of Ligue 1.

Greenwood’s double came after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring after eleven minutes, while Timothy Weah and Igor Paixao also got on the scoresheet to move Marseille above Paris Saint-Germain in the standings as the Parisiens faced Le Havre on Saturday.

Marseille took a deserved lead when Benjamin Pavard headed Greenwood’s corner towards goal, and Aubameyang was on hand to fire the ball past the bodies on the line and into the back of the net.

Greenwood scored his first just after the half-hour mark, with his strike wrong-footing Yehvann Diouf in Nice’s goal, but followed up with an even better goal after the break as he dribbled through the opposition defense before firing past the goalkeeper from the edge of the penalty area.

Aubameyang continued his impact in the second half, assisting both Weah and Paixao either side of Mohamed-Ali Cho’s effort for the hosts as Roberto De Zerbi’s side ran away with the score.

Greenwood had a brilliant chance late on to score a third, dribbling into the penalty area before looking to put the ball into the bottom left corner, but Diouf did well to get down quickly and deny the striker, although the damage had already been done.

Data Debrief: Greenwood and Aubameyang clash

De Zerbi got the clinical performance he had hoped for from his side after the international break, with Marseille producing 2.87 expected goals (xG) from 11 shots on target and Nice’s 1.2 from seven attempts on target.

Greenwood has now scored ten goals in Ligue 1 this season, more than any other player in the competition. He is the fourth player to reach double figures for goals in Europe’s top five leagues this season, after Harry Kane (13), Kylian Mbappe (13) and Erling Haaland (14).

It was a milestone day for Aubameyang, who has now scored 400 goals in his professional career. The Gabon international led his team in touches in the penalty area (five), chances created (four), big chances (two) and assists (two).
