When will the NHL trades come?
The Chris Johnston Show: Chris Johnston, when asked about the trade market and when will things pick up?
** NHLRumors.com transcription
Julian McKenzie: “CJ, I’ll continue it here. From the Fighting Mongoose you’re asking these questions about trades you knew were coming. Do you think there could be some early season trades this year, or should we wait until closer to the trade deadline? We just want these trades, CJ.
Johnston: “Yeah, I don’t know what’s going to happen. You know, I feel like there’s more discussion going on around the league, the last, I call it a week or 10 days. You know, that doesn’t always produce results, but you know, you need to at least have teams that feel like they have needs, and teams that feel like they have players that they might want to move. And you need those discussions in general to stimulate the trade market.”
NHL Rumors: Speculation about Brayden Schenn will only increase
You know, you had the (Lukas) Reichel deal with Vancouver under those kind of circumstances, and the Canucks just felt like they needed to get a live body, forward to help their team. And so some of it comes.
But I mean, I do think November will have a little more action. But right now I have no reason to think there will be a lot of fireworks coming.
You know, we still have that. The UFA market has been weakening even since our last show. I know we’re focusing on that, I mean, Jacob Markstrom, you know, like I just said, on that show, but formally signs his two-year contract over the weekend, $6 million per season, another goalie is off the market.
I mean, trades are going to have to be a way to solve problems for teams or get better. I mean, I know we’re a long way from free agency in 2026, but the fact remains there isn’t much. And so I hope that this can lead to some trading activity.
You know, the kind of trades that normally get made during the season are all about addressing issues of the moment, and whether it’s a team trying to strengthen for a stronger run or to fill a lineup need or whatever. But it’s a long way of saying, and not too optimistic, that if we do, the dam will soon break.
NHL Rumors: Will the Ottawa Senators make a move and will it be a weird trade year?
But that sometimes all it takes is one thing, something happens that trickles down. So you know, we know that Thanksgiving in the US seems to be this mythical day on the NHL calendar, and we’re getting closer to that.
