NHL rumors: what’s going on with the Buffalo Sabres?

Some changes were needed with the Buffalo Sabres, but were they too scared to make the movements?

“Look, I think Sabres has a lot of work to do. I think management is sometimes paralyzed by a number of real talented Buffalo Sabres players succeed elsewhere. I think they are afraid of making the wrong move. I think they look at their collection of players standing for them and see individually, but the collective is clearly not.

And I see a team that had to make really important changes this summer. And apart from moving JJ Peterka, who had to do, there has not been enough change to go back to the Sabres and to view them on paper and say, “Oh, this is a team that can take the next step forward.”

We saw nothing of that progress under Lindy Ruff in his first year with the team. And I think the players probably wear something of it. They are the ones who are going to compete there. I think it has been a relatively miserable atmosphere.

They have a lot of pressure to end the play -off drought that some of them have nothing to do with, and I get that part. But I think that your season essentially transmitted through our Thanksgiving at the end of November, made it a very difficult place to play.

And it’s a shame, because I think we all hope and carrots for the Buffalo Sabres to come back. It is such an incredibly important market in the NHL. And it hurt me as someone who has viewed a lot of exciting games and incredible atmospheres in Buffalo, to really have that far from the NHL radar.

It feels like they need wholesale changes, and I don’t argue at all for someone to lose their jobs. I only say as an organization to get back on the right track, because it was a long time ago that we have seen the Buffalo Sabres on the right track and competitive.
