NHL Rumors: Toronto Maple Leafs and the St. Louis Blues

The Toronto Maple Leafs are still interested in Luke Schenn, and they are keeping an eye on Dougie Hamilton

TSN: The Toronto Maple Leafs have been without defenseman Chris Tanev for an unknown amount of time, possibly this season. Oliver Ekman-Larsson went down on Wednesday night and Brandon Carlo may not be 100%. Pierre LeBrun notes that adding a defenseman sooner rather than later could put more pressure on the Leafs.

“Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving, as we’ve discussed before at Insider Trading, has been mapping the defense market, looking at his options. For example, we mentioned potential interest in Luke Schenn of the Winnipeg Jets, I think it’s still there.

You know, I said last week that Toronto is a team to watch, along with Dougie Hamilton. I don’t know if the Leafs can deliver on that and where that goes with Dougie Hamilton, but I think Toronto is on the list of teams that Dougie Hamilton has endorsed, along with many other teams that are obviously on his list.”

NHL Injuries: Blackhawks, Oilers, Kings, Wild, Habs, Senators, Penguins, Leafs and more

Trade comparisons for the St. Louis Blues and Robert Thomas

Jeremy Rutherford and Shyna Goldman of The Athletic: Robert Thomas’ production with the St. Louis Blues is down this season, but he’s not the only one on the Blues roster. He is currently on IR with a lower body injury, but there is speculation they might listen.

If they moved Thomas and broke their core, it would leave a big hole in the middle. He would draw a lot of trade interest, as would forwards Pavel Buchnevich and Jordan Kyrou.

Looking at trade comparisons of the No. 1 centers over the past five seasons, there have really only been three (according to Goldman): Tomas Hertl, Jack Eichel and Bo Horvat. If we look at the top six centers, there would be four: JT Miller, Elias Lindholm, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Ryan O’Reilly.

Eichel only took a first, second, Alex Tuch and Peyton Krebs, but there was an influence from the neck surgery. Lindholm, O’Reilly and Horvat (pending UFAs) all scored a first and a prospect/pick. Hertl was in the second year of an eight-year deal and received a first-round pick and a prospect who was picked in the first round last year.

A return for Thomas should at least yield a first-round pick and a high-end prospect/up-and-comer.

NHL Rumors: Dougie Hamilton and New Jersey, and Rasmus Andersson and Boston

Rutherford adds that an offer from Thomas has to be really good for them to consider it. His $8.125 million cap hit will only look better over the years if he can keep his production up. He is their best offensive player and can be one of their better defensive players.
