NHL Rumors: Toronto Maple Leafs and the Colorado Avalanche

The Toronto Maple Leafs don’t have many assets to work with

Jonas Siegel of The Athletic: It seems unlikely that the Toronto Maple Leafs will trade Max Domi. He has two years left at $3.75 million and won’t produce much return. Maybe another bad contract.

The Leafs could probably move UFA forward Scott Laughton, but they won’t get back a first-round pick and prospect like they gave up for him last year. The same can be said for injured defenseman Brandon Carlo.

Defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson and forwards Bobby McMann and Nic Roy are moveable, but you won’t get big picks for them. Mid-round draft picks won’t help this team next year.

The Leafs’ 2026 first-round pick is top-five protected (Boston), and their 2027 first-round pick is top-10 protected (Philadelphia).

Having a healthy Carlo, Chris Tanev and Anthony Stolarz would certainly help the Leafs this season.

NHL Rumors: The Carolina Hurricanes aren’t afraid to go after big names

Potential trade targets for the Colorado Avalanche at 3C

Corey Masisak of the Denver Post: Colorado Avalanche coach Jared Bednar when asked if there was a hole on his roster he would like to fill.

“I like the way we’re playing throughout the lineup, so the depth is good,” Bednar said. “If I look at something, for example on a wish list, is it a 3C spot? How does that all work out for us?

“I think all the guys in our lineup are playing well, but it makes sure we have depth, chemistry, control ability and scoring ability on every line because we have to go deep to get out of our division.”

Some possible options for Avalanche as 3C.

Ross Colton – Filling the position internally should not be ruled out if he can handle the defensive side of things while maintaining the offense.

Ryan O’Reilly – Nashville Predators – Another year at $4.5 million, and that would give the Avs a very nice top four pick. A bidding war could ensue if O’Reilly decides he wants to be traded, and where does he want to go?

Nazem Kadri – Calgary Flames – With two years left at $7 million, it’s a gamble.

Alexander Wennberg – San Jose Sharks – Pending UFA for $5.5 million and suitable on the third line and not in a top six role.

NHL Rumors: Washington Capitals will see what’s available

Jason Dickinson – Chicago Blackhawks – Pending UFA for $4.25 million. This year he didn’t make up the numbers like he did last year.

Charlie Coyle – Columbus Blue Jackets – Pending UFA for $5.25 million. Former Av, but his cap was too high. Would the Blue Jackets be retained?
