Pagnotta: “You know, the plan was for Kyle Dubas and JP Barry, Gino Malkin’s agent, to sit down during the Olympics and have a conversation and discuss what an extension might look like between the two?

What I can tell you is that they haven’t had those conversations yet, but they still plan to. And we know Geno wants to play Malkin. He wants to continue. He thinks he can do it, and he’s open to a one-year extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins. I believe the Pens are open to that as well, based on how this season has gone.
Clearly, Sidney Crosby’s health will affect both Canada and the Pittsburgh Penguins for the remainder of their season. So, you know, everyone there is keeping a close eye on what’s going on. But based on how the Penguins have played this year, I think there’s an openness to looking at that.
It will really come down to which type of deal makes the most sense. Is it one year, 5 million? Is it 6.5 that he is making now? Is it anywhere nearby? That’s what they have to decide. That’s what they have to figure out.
But the plan remains in place for the Penguins and Malkin camp to have a conversation before returning to action next week to determine if they can agree to an extension or agree on a path, and they will finalize things once the season is over. One way or another, they will have a lot of clarity about Mark and the future next week once the matches resume.
