Will the Florida Panthers become complete sellers? Would they trade Sergei Bobrovsky?
Sportsnet: Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts: The Podcast – NHL Trade Deadline: A Buyers’ Market episode on the Florida Panthers. What will the Panthers do with incoming UFA goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky? Will the Panthers be complete sellers?
** NHLRumors.com transcripts
“You know, Florida. There’s been a lot of talk about Bobrovsky the last few days. I think the challenge there is that, you know, Bobrovsky saw a lot of guys get paid last year. Ekblad got a big extension, he’s 30. Bennett got a big extension, he’s 29. But the other guy who got a big extension, Marchand at 37, okay? Bobrosky is 37.”
And while he’s had a rough year at times this year, he’s still a future Hall of Famer who was the backbone of a two-time defending Stanley Cup champion, possibly one day removed. And you know, the Panthers, I guess they have a limit to where they want to go. But it’s not always easy when a player who is a key player in such a team sees other guys getting paid. And above all, especially one player around his age. And they say, ‘Okay, maybe we won’t do that, maybe we can’t do that for you.’
NHL Rumors: Vancouver Canucks and the Buffalo Sabres
So I don’t know. I think Florida gets things done when they want to get things done. They proved that to us. Don’t doubt them. Last year we didn’t think all three guys could pull it off. Kyle, she did it. But it’s clear they haven’t gotten into an area that Bobrosky is comfortable with yet.”
Kyle Bukauskas: “So do you think this is a team that’s entering the seller’s zone here, as you say? I know it’s been a rough year for him, injuries and results-wise. There are still little loopholes here regarding the Eastern Conference playoffs. I mean, I couldn’t see them as a big buyer at this point.”
Friedman: “No.”
Bukakas: “Because of where they are, because of the limited resources they have.”
Friedman: “I understand. Unless it’s someone with a term?”
Bukaukas: “I understand.”
Friedman: “Someone with a term. Yes.”
Bukauskas: “But I just wonder if there’s any part of it that goes, ‘well, let’s see how long we can go or how interesting we can make this.’
Friedman: “They have a week. Like them, Marchand fell on their lap minutes before the trade deadline last year, right? So I always assume they’re not uncomfortable with that.”
Bukauskas: “Especially, yeah, if the market is what your contact suggested, I wonder if they’re a team that says, ‘Oh, really, that’s all it’s going to cost to bring that guy in. Yeah, I think he could help us here somehow. Why not?’
NHL Rumors: Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens
I mean, they’ve proven to be the example of, ‘oh, you don’t see any value in this player? Yes, we’ll take them and we’ll make them a big deal here.
Friedman: “They’re a smart front office, so I could expect anything from them. But you know, the Bobrovsky thing is interesting to me. I don’t know how to hinder that right now, but I can see why a player like that might look and say, ‘Okay, all those other guys are taken care of, you know, I should do that too.'”
