Would Jordan Binnington solve all the Edmonton Oilers problems?
Sportsnet: David Amber and Nick Kypreos talks about the Edmonton Oilers and some of their problems. Would St. Louis Blues Jordan Binnington solve one of their problems, and can they even make it work?
** NHLRumors.com transcription
Kypreos: “The word coming out of Edmonton and their locker room (David Amber) is: our issues go way beyond just our goaltender here. And of course, yeah, that’s a mess defensively, and guys are definitely having disappointing years on that blue line.
NHL news and injuries: Hart, Waivers, Ducks, Hurricanes, Stars and Rangers
But right now there are a few things they need to fix. But wouldn’t you just jump straight into the net and do everything humanly possible to rectify a situation in there and get someone else?
Amber: What are you doing? That’s the thing, like (Juuse) Saros, and how do you do Saros?
Kypreos: “(Jordan) Binnington is my, is the man?
Amber: “Binnington.
Kypreos: “Yes, Binnington. Jordan, because St. Louis is vulnerable. They’re not going to re-sign him to a long-term deal. He wants to play longer. There’s a history, you know, there’s a chemistry with McDavid from Four Nations. He’s considered a gamer. Like, if you want to roll the dice on a goalie, I think it has to be Binnington.”
Amber: “Yeah, you know, it’s funny that when we talk about whether it’s the Leafs or the Oilers with, you know, an opportunity to change the composition of their lineup, of all the teams in the NHL, the Leafs and the Oilers, to me, are in the toughest situation because they don’t have a lot of draft capital. They don’t have a lot of top-end prospect capital. So then you basically have to take players from your current roster to add a goaltender like Billington.
And I just wonder how they do it. I’m not saying it can’t be done. I just wonder how they manage it.
Kypreos: ‘Well, you move (Stuart) Skinner’s contract to, I think, two and a half, if I’m not mistaken, and then you have to say goodbye to someone like Adam Henriquestands at $3 million. And that will create space.
NHL Rumors: What will it cost the stars to extend Robertson?
Amber: “And you think St. Louis would do that? They’re going to trade Binnington for…”
Kypreos: “Well, I know. I don’t think so. I think it’s just that you might have to move Henrique’s somewhere else, but the easiest way to clear your cap is around $3 million.
Look at the guys who are expendable now. Earn $3 million league-wide. He’s the only guy I picked from their lineup. I don’t know if St. Louis takes them or if you send them somewhere else, but that’s something, some freedom there.
And then there’s, there’s no world where you sign another goalkeeper and keep Skinner, right? It’s just over. Let that man go somewhere else. And I think St. Louis would be happy to get out of Binnington’s contract again next year, knowing that there’s a major rebuild going on, and that they have different goaltenders now that they’re looking ahead, I think it’s possible.
Amber: “That’s interesting. It’s funny. I’ll go back to Tuesday’s game. You know, Skinner was pulled after allowing four goals in the first period. He made the save. He made the first save on three of the four goals, and (Evan) Bouchard and (Brett) Kulak, etc., stood there and let the guys get rebounds, you know, they got beat by the positioning. They couldn’t get their stick in the right lane, and they were, you know, tapping second chance goals.
So, and I’m not, I’m not putting Skinner off in any way, but my point is, I do think that when you said there have been a lot of defensive failures, there really have been a lot of defensive failures, and the goaltending has been poor to say the least.
NHL Rumors: Are Rasmus Andersson’s Days Numbered in Calgary?
But it will take more than Jordan Binnington, in my opinion, with the way the defense is being played for Skinner, to really turn this around. But at least, you know, at least with a guy like Bennington, maybe there’s essentially a greater level of trust.
