Andrew Mangiapane’s role has diminished and a change of scenery could be welcome
Sportsnet: Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts: The Podcast – Roster Shakeups Around the NHL episode, about Edmonton Oilers forward Andrew Mangiapane. The Oilers are getting healthy and AHL forwards Isaac Howard and Quinn Hutson are playing well and could eventually be recalled. Mangiapane’s ice time has diminished and the situation is not as either side had hoped. He has a no-trade clause, but a change of scenery would be welcome.

“So we’re in a situation where there’s going to be some extra bodies. And I understand that one of the names that could potentially be affected by that is going to be Andrew Mangiapane. And you know, Mangiapane started this year in a bigger role, and lately he’s struggled to find both ice time and consistency.
NHL Injuries: Ducks, Hurricanes, Blackhawks, Islanders, Penguins, Sharks, Blues, Mammoths and Jets
In the last ten games he has scored three under ten minutes. In fact, he has only played three games in which he has played more than eleven. He had an 11:41, he had a 12:16 in those five wins you mentioned over Calgary, and he had a 13:02. That’s the most in his last 10 games in Toronto, when the Oilers won there in a game you covered.
So Mangiapane practiced on Sunday in Winnipeg, on the fourth line. The Oilers play the Jets on Monday night. And we’ve seen a few trades recently, Kyle, where players with their situation just didn’t work out. Phillip Danault was one in LA. Mason Marchment was another in Seattle. And the Kraken, now 4-0. You know, they are, that one lit them. But those were players who were dealt because, look, it just didn’t work, and you try to move on and find a better situation.
Now Mangiapane has a trading ban this year. He’s on a complete no-trade until, I believe, mid-June. But I think there is an understanding that if the Oilers can find something for Mangiapane on another team, where he could perhaps play a bigger role, that he would be willing to forego in that situation.
So again, it’s one of these things. I don’t think it’s a hard and fast trade call or anything like that, but I think there’s just a realization that, like Danault, like Marchment, it just wasn’t working at that spot. And if another situation can be found, I think Mangiapane would want to look into it.
So we’ll see where that develops in the coming days. But a big part of this is led by Edmonton finally getting healthy, and Howard and Hutson are lighting the fire. And in that situation there will be guys who have to sit. There will be less time for other guys, and I think Mangiapane is one of those who could potentially be moved to free up spots. We’ll see how it turns out.”
Kyle Bukauskas: “So you believe there could be a willingness on both sides in terms of looking and understanding, maybe a fresh start is best here?”
NHL Rumors: Could There Be Fewer Trades Than We Think?
Friedman: “Yes, I think both sides would be willing in the right situation. Yes.”
