The Calgary Flames have not yet spoken to MacKenzie Weegar about his no-trade clause, but that is expected to happen in the coming week.
Daily confrontation: David Pagnotta on Calgary Flames defenseman MacKenzie Weegar, who as of Thursday has not discussed waiving his no-trade clause. The parties are expected to have that conversation next week. There are teams interested in the right-handed defenseman.
“What I can tell you is that (at the time of doing this) (Flames GM) Craig Conroy has not yet contacted Weegar and his camp about his no-trade clause. He has a full no-trade clause, so he will have a say in where he ends up.
I expect this to happen sometime next week. I don’t know how that conversation goes. I’m not MacKenzie Weegar. But I expect that conversation to take place within the next week, to at least give the Flames an idea of what he might consider. He can easily say, ‘No, he doesn’t want to go anywhere.’
Two of the teams most prominently associated with him are Ottawa and Detroit. I’m not entirely sure that Ottawa, even though it’s something of a hometown for him, is a good fit at this point. I know Steve Staois likes the player. I know guys in Ottawa really like the player. I just don’t know if that fits, and I’d be a little surprised if he were swinging to go there at this point in his career.

Detroit, interesting. Boston, also looking for a good opportunity D. That would be interesting to see what these types of teams would try to accomplish to get MacKenzie Weegar. But I suspect there are legitimate Cup contenders reaching out, whether it’s Tampa or another team, a Cup contender, looking to strengthen their support base.
Bring a right shooter who can play both left and right. Solid hit for one of the most underrated, still, defensemen in the National Hockey League, just over 6 million. There will continue to be interest in him.
Again, I expect some sort of conversation in the coming week about waving his no trade, or understanding where he stands. There’s no real rush. He still has a long contract, but he is a very attractive piece.”
