No guarantees given to the Wild by Quinn Hughes’ camp
Michael RussoSources said last night that no guarantees had been given to the Minnesota Wild that Quinn Hughes would sign an extension with them after July 1. Wild GM Bill Guerin knows him well, though.
Chris Johnston: One major advantage the Wild now have over any other team that could potentially sign Hughes if he were to go to UFA is:
“They will be the only team that can sign him for eight years with a front-loaded structure including unlimited signing bonuses before the CBA rules change on September 15.”
NHL Injuries: Blackhawks, Wild, Islanders, Penguins, Lightning, Maple Leafs, Jets and more
Some fallout after Quinn was traded last night
Pierre LeBrun: Was told the Canucks had received six legitimate trade offers for Hughes, and many teams were calling to inquire. That explains the quality the Canucks were able to get from the Wild.
Darren Dreger: “The Canucks had known for a while that Hughes would not renew. Van believed their leverage was highest in December-January. NJD had a chance. Other teams in the East had a chance. A week ago, Guerin committed and closed the deal.”
Pierre LeBrun: Heard that the New Jersey Devils made what they believed to be a strong initial offer to the Canucks for Hughes. It clearly didn’t generate enough traction for the Canucks.
Jim Biringer: “As Rutherford said tonight, no one could match what Minnesota had to offer. Despite being a strong offer, it makes you wonder about that first-round pick and how Rutherford said it’s a strong draft. Maybe the Devils wanted it protected. But they didn’t have the resources to make it happen #njdevils“
NHL Rumors: Dark Jersey Matchups and the Montreal Canadiens
Jimmy Murphy: Heard that the Washington Capitals and Canucks had discussed a deal involving Connor McMichael, prospect Cole Hutson, and two first-round draft picks.
Believe the Wild’s offer was better than the Capitals’ offer.
Marco D’Amico: Sources say the Devils and Capitals both had potential pieces they could have picked up to get a deal done, but the Wild stepped up and outbid them.
- Marco D’Amico: The Capitals really like Cole Hutson.
- “To clarify, Hutson was also one of the wanted pieces. Capitals could have included him, both sides discussed his name. But the demand got a bit too rich with other names and assets requested. Minnesota finally stepped up and paid the price in the last 24 hours.”
Max Bultman: Was a big miss by the Detroit Red Wings.
Max Bultman: “The wild package for Hughes is huge, and I can understand the Red Wings’ hesitation. Matching Buium would have been extremely difficult. But guys like Hughes rarely become available. They now may have to wait until (when) he is a free agent for another opportunity. We’ll see.”
