The gap between the Ottawa Senators and Shane Pinto is wide
The Ottawa Citizen’s Bruce Garrioch: Ottawa Senators forward Shane Pinto is in the final year of his contract, which carries a cap hit of $3.75 million. Senators GM Steve Staios has said multiple times that extension talks with agent Lewis Gross during the offseason were “positive.”
“Their side said they wanted to get the season started and not have any distractions,” Staios told TSN’s Claire Hanna and Marc Denis last week. “We are open to having a conversation with Shane. We think we want him to be part of this core group.
“He knows that. We know that. And it’s important for us to see him grow with the group.”
Sources say there is a big gap in what the senators and Pinto’s camp think is the fair market value. Insiders say the senators may be considering a long-term deal worth between $5 million and $5.5 million. A league executive said Pinto was thinking perhaps between Dylan Cozen’s $7.1 million and Tim Stutzle’s $8.35 million.
NHL Rumors: The Sabers Tax and Alex Tuch
The Vancouver Canucks are looking at all center options
TSN: The Vancouver Canucks are calling teams looking for a center, preferably a No. 2 center, according to Darren Dreger.
What makes the problem even worse is the fact that they lost Filip Chytil for an extended period of time this weekend. Teddy Blueger is also out. You’re not just going to scour the market and find a No. 2 center. So Allvin is looking at all options, including 3/4 depth guys, maybe No. 5 depth guys in the NHL.
Pete DeBoer is waiting for a new coaching opportunity
TSN: It’s a little too early for coaches to be in the right seat, but Pete DeBoer could be ready if an opening opens up, according to Darren Dreger. He is still being paid by the Dallas Stars this year and is scouting for Team Canada as he is an assistant to Jon Cooper.
Drama always surrounds the Toronto Maple Leafs
“So right now he does have something going on, and you’re right, James. If you look at Pete DeBoer’s resume, he could look for the best fit, he could go with the best pick, but that’s not his approach. He’ll look at absolutely everything. It’s too early in the season to put coaches in a hot seat, but if there is one in the near future, he wants to be considered.”
