Shane Pinto has rejected the latest long-term offer from the Ottawa Senators
Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Shane Pinto is a running RFA with arbitration rights and is producing at an almost point-a-game pace. General Manager Steve Staios has said he wants to sign the 24-year-old to a longer-term contract, but what is the number?
Discussions about extension continue. They had conversations in the offseason, but they were put on hold before the start of camp because they couldn’t bridge the gap. A source said the Senators made an eight-year, $52 million offer in mid-October — a maximum amount of $6.5 million. That’s more than the $5 million the Senators offered this offseason. There’s talk around the league that Pinto could be looking between Dylan Cozens’ $7.1 million and Tim Stutzle’s $8.35 million.
Pinto must also define the term. Does he want it short term or does he want to stay in Ottawa for eight years? Brady Tkachuk’s contract expires after the 2027-2028 season. Some think a three- to six-year contract makes sense for Pinto.
NHL Rumors: Columbus Blue Jackets and the Toronto Maple Leafs
Edmonton Oilers Troy Stecher is getting some interest
Sportsnet: Elliotte Friedman with the Edmonton Oilers will soon have some injured players back, and defenseman Troy Stecher will get some trade interest.
** NHLRumors.com transcription
Ron McLean: “When the Rangers beat Edmonton recently at JT Miller’s, the defense pulled away. Obviously Evan Bouchard had a tough night and everyone is kind of pointing the finger at him. And even (Mattias) Ekholm has been off his game a little bit. So I’m surprised there are any changes on the blue line, but there is one possibility.
Friedman: “Well, there’s a lot of players coming back from injury, right? For example, there’s Hyman who can come back, and (Mattias) Janmark can come back. (Alec) Regula can come back.”
NHL Rumors: Montreal Canadiens, Calgary Flames and Nazem Kadri
And one of the names that is definitely going around there is Troy Stecher. And Stecher won’t play in our late game against Chicago tonight. He’s one of the extra D, and they have a few extra now.
Now it doesn’t necessarily have to be Stecher, Ron. I think Oilers have considered a few things. But he is certainly one of the people being considered. I’ve heard there’s some interest, and I think the Oilers are trying to find a soft landing for him.”
