The Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver Canucks have shown some interest in Steven Stamkos
Marc Dumont of Sportsnaut: The Montreal Canadiens had some interest in David Kampf, but he went to the Vancouver Canucks. They could use a left-handed center.
Jeff Marek said on the Sekeres and Price show that the Montreal Canadiens are one of the teams that have shown some interest in Nashville Predators forward Steven Stamkos.
“Where could Stamkos end up?” Marek asked on the Sekeres and prize show. “Make no mistake, Vancouver is part of that conversation, as is Montreal, as are a number of teams. I don’t know about the full freight business, but I know they are in discussions there.”
NHL Injuries: Bruins, Stars, Devils, Islanders, Sens, Pens, Kraken, Lightning and Maple Leafs
This does not mean that something is imminent. Stamkos plays more on the left and is left-handed. He has two years left at $8 million each.
Predators center Ryan O’Reilly may be a better fit for the Canadiens. He has a cap hit of $4.5 million. The cost to acquire O’Reilly will be high, with Alex Daugherty suggesting it could be a first and a talented candidate. The Canadiens have a first, but probably wouldn’t want to move Michael Hage and Alexander Zharovsky.
The Pittsburgh Penguins and Evgeni Malkin will continue to make things happen
TSN: Pierre LeBrun said the Pittsburgh Penguins agents and Evgeni Malkin spoke before the season and it was decided they would let the season play.
“They had clear communication with Malkin and his agent, JP Berry, prior to the season where we can see how this season plays out and let’s all talk during the Olympic break in February to see how Malkin is feeling, how the team is feeling, where the team is and then talk about the future.
That’s still what they’re going to do, but you said it, he’s having an incredible season. He leads them in scoring and the only thing that could affect this is that he hasn’t decided yet if he plays past this year.”
The number of injuries increases trade negotiations
TSN: Darren Dreger said injuries in the league are increasing trade interest and speculation.
“I look at the Montreal Canadiens. They have been plagued by long-term injuries lately. The Canadiens are one of those teams that are going around the league, they are looking for the right fit up front.”
NHL Rumors: Will the Toronto Maple Leafs Now Retain Nick Robertson?
It doesn’t necessarily have to be a center. We know Kent Hughes wants a No. 2 center, he’s just looking for help up front.”
Dreger adds that there are not many sellers and prices are high.
