In today’s NHL rumors, the Seattle Kraken aren’t done with their quest for elite scoring after striking out Artemi Panarin. Meanwhile, the Edmonton Oilers are linked to a veteran forward, tensions between Mike Sullivan and JT Miller are hopefully simmering in New York, and the Montreal Canadiens appear satisfied – but not complacent – with their current roster construction.
Kraken ready for second swing after Panarin Miss
The Seattle Kraken made some serious waves by appearing as a surprise bidder for Artemi Panarin before ultimately landing with the Los Angeles Kings. Seattle has reportedly put a huge four-year offer on the table. While Panarin chose Los Angeles, the Kraken’s aggressive offense sent a message throughout the league.
According to Elliotte FriedmanThrough the 32 Thoughts podcast, Seattle won’t spend that kind of money on just anyone, but they’ve shown they will for the right fit. “It is known that the Kraken need to score more in their top six. If Panarin was a target, then it is easy to determine some other potential candidates to join the organization,” Friedman noted.
With cap flexibility and a clear need, you can expect Seattle to quickly turn around and re-enter the market, either via trade or free agency. Alex Tuch stands out as a potential target. The Buffalo Sabers remain distant from Tuch in contract talks, and while it would be unpopular to trade him midway through the playoffs, his long-term future remains uncertain.
Oilers Scribe floats one-for-one swap
Although the NHL is currently in a trade freeze, that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from spinning. For the Edmonton Oilers, talks continue on upgrading their top nine forwards as they find a new home for Andrew Mangiapane. One idea gaining traction is a one-for-one trade with the Los Angeles Kings involving former oilman Warren Foegele.
The proposed deal– Mangiapane for Foegele – makes financial sense, with nearly identical cap hits and remaining term. From an Edmonton perspective, Foegele brings speed, anticipation and familiarity. However, following the addition of Panarin, the Kings may have little interest in another similar winger, meaning Edmonton may still have to move Mangiapane separately before he can address other needs.
It is unknown if Foegele would want to return or if the Oilers would want to bring him back.
Friction brewing between Sullivan and Miller in New York
While Mike Sullivan and JT Miller are currently united with Team USA at the Olympics, questions are being raised about their working relationship once they return to New York. The Rangers’ season has gone into a tailspin and the frustrations are starting to show, especially in Miller’s public comments about not knowing what to do with this team. Sullivan also seems frustrated that his message isn’t getting through.

Elliotte Friedman noted that while both are fiercely competitive, the dynamic between head coach and Miller needs to improve – or management may have to intervene.
said Friedman:
“Mike Sullivan and JT Miller are on a business trip to Italy. Gold is the goal and nothing can get in the way of that. But at some point they have to sit down and discuss some Rangers. I understand that losing sucks and Miller doesn’t want to add fuel to the fire with his post-match comments. But there has to be a better way than the way he is answering the questions now. It just fuels tensions. Sullivan is clearly just as frustrated and feels his message is not being understood.” He is the coach and Miller is the captain. They have to work together to make it better. Otherwise, the Rangers will have to make changes there too.”
Sullivan recently signed a long-term deal and the Rangers also made a major commitment to Miller. But if a big change becomes necessary, Miller could be the most moveable piece, especially with contenders like Minnesota reportedly keeping a close eye on the situation.
Canadiens content – for now – just keep a close eye on one place
According to David Pagnottathe Montreal Canadiens are largely comfortable with their current roster, and GM Kent Hughes feels no pressure to make any immediate moves. That said, there is still a recognized desire to upgrade the right side of the first line if the right opportunity presents itself.
If a clear deal becomes available, the Canadiens could still engage in trade talks.
