It’s a disaster in Ottawa, and they don’t have a first-round pick because of their old GM and under a different ownership group
Daily confrontation: The Ottawa Senators are set to miss the playoffs and have to forfeit their first-round pick because of something done under their previous ownership and management group. Jeff Marek doesn’t think it’s right. There is precedent from the Ilya Kovalchuk situation in New Jersey that the NHL could reconsider and give them their draft pick back.
Tyler Yaremchuk: “They don’t have a first-round pick this year. They’ll probably miss the playoffs. Like, this is a disaster, you want to call Vancouver a mess because Vancouver has a franchise record of long losses. Yes, Vancouver is a mess. Ottawa is a disaster.”
Marek: “Which makes it even more infuriating for Ottawa Senators owner Michael Andlauer and Steve Staois, and going all the way down, this violation was non-existent, right? Like, this was nothing they did that required them to surrender to this.
NHL Rumors: Toronto Maple Leafs and the St. Louis Blues
Honestly, with Ilya Kovalchuk’s contract situation, I know the New Jersey Devils wanted to make a first-round pick. That was eventually covered up and it went away.
I wonder/hope, given that there is a precedent with Kovalchuck, that this one goes away. I didn’t like it when it first happened. I didn’t think it was fair to Andlauer and the Ottawa Senators. I still feel exactly the same way about it, and I don’t think anything will change my mind.
I hope the same mercy the NHL showed the New Jersey Devils when the Kovachuk surrendered the first round draft pick is the same mercy they show to the Ottawa Senators here. Whereas, Tyler, to your point, they’re on the verge of disaster, and if things keep going wrong and then have to give up a first-round pick, I don’t like that.”
