NHL Rumors: Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Tristan Jarry

The Penguins won’t retain Tristan Jarry, which essentially takes the Oilers out

Sportsnet: Elliotte Friedman and Kyle Bukauskas on 32 Thoughts: The Podcast – Can Canucks trade Quinn Hughes? episode about the Edmonton Oilers and Pittsburgh Penguins on a Tristan Jarry trade. The Penguins will not withhold salary for Jarry, who has two years left on his contract, making it very difficult for the Oilers to do.

Bukauskas: “Another name you’ve been floating around online the last few days, Tristan Jarry. Linked to the Edmonton Oilers. I mean, there was that shot of the hug between Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard that seemed to stick a little bit after the win against Seattle on Thursday. And everyone’s trying to decipher, okay, ‘What, what does that mean? What does that mean?’

NHL Rumors: Could the Montreal Canadiens Make a Run for Phillip Danault?

That was another part of Saturday’s Headlines for you, Elliotte. Jarry and the Oilers, what’s going on, if anything?

Friedman: “So there was a report Friday night that indicated a deal had been made with a 50% retention. And you know, the only thing that’s absolutely true is that Edmonton showed a lot of interest in Jarry. That’s real. I can’t remember who was the first to report it, but it’s true.”

And what I had to work through a little bit was what was fact and what was fiction. And let me tell you, it’s a fact that the Oilers thought it was a good idea. And which is also a fact, and it really explained to me a lot of this Pickard stuff, Kyle, that you and I talked about, and that he kind of admitted that he knew. I think he knew that if they got Jarry, he was gone.

That, because I’ve since found out it wouldn’t be Jarry for Skinner, but Jarry and Skinner. One of the things we’ve talked about a lot is that the Oilers wouldn’t change their goal unless they truly believe there is room for improvement. And I think you could argue that a Skinner-Jarry combination, assuming both could stay healthy, was an improvement. And they hoped that they could do that, and that they would push each other and force each other to be better. That was their goal.

What has happened now that ends things for the time being is that I am told that Pittsburgh is absolutely unwilling to hold on. Jarry has two years left on his contract for just under $5.4 million, and they, the Penguins, have made it very clear that if they did this, there would be no retention.

And if you’re an Oiler fan, you know it’s going to be very difficult for them to do that. The Oilers have a tight cap, and right now they have a lot of injuries, and guys are just going in and out, and they barely have any extra players on board. As if their selection is stuck. So they really couldn’t do a lot of things, even if they wanted to, without dollars coming in and dollars coming out. A bit like we discussed with New Jersey.

NHL Rumors: Will the Edmonton Oilers make a goaltending move this season?

So I’m told that has made that trade almost impossible unless the Oilers make an operation of their own. And I’m not convinced they want to do that. So basically, where we are, yeah, they do love Jarry. Yes, they would like or want a Jarry-Skinner combo. But no, they can’t do that in their current situation unless bodies come out.

So what I was actually told was: could this happen? Possibly. Would they want it to happen? Yes, I think they would be interested. Can it happen? Very, very difficult and it might not happen.”
