The Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs have discussed trade
David Staples of The Edmonton Journal: The Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs have been in trade talks, according to David Pagnotta, when Jeff Marek asked him about it on his The Sheet podcast.
“Yes, there was a report out of Edmonton that leading up to this freeze, they’ve had conversations with the Toronto Maple Leafs. I don’t know exactly where they’re going. I’m going to speculate a little bit. And it wasn’t (Toronto winger) Bobby McMann. I know there was a lot of attention and a lot of speculation around Bobby McMann going into the week.”
I know they didn’t talk about McMann, but it sounds like it might be a (center of Toronto) Nic Roy. Maybe it’s a (Top 4 d-man) Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Those are two that I wouldn’t be shocked if they had poked at them. But a few people told me that the Oilers and Leafs had conversations leading up to the deadline, the freeze, Deadline Jr. And that could be something to keep an eye on as we come out of the hiatus and closer to the actual D-Day.”

Bob Stauffer and Elliotte Friedman have noted that the Oilers are likely looking for a third-line winger, with Stauffer saying someone with size and speed. McMann is from Alberta, big, fast and has a cap hit of $1.35 million.
The Oilers have cap issues and are trying to shift Andrew Mangiapane’s $3.6 million cap hit, which extends into next season. A sweetener will likely be needed to move his contract.
Adam Henrique and his $3 million cap hit will return soon, so that will further complicate the Oilers cap situation.
The 34-year-old Ekman-Larsson has two years left on his contract at $3.5 million and could make sense for the Oilers in the short term. We would have to move Mangiapane’s contract elsewhere for the Oilers to even consider it. The cost of acquiring McMann could be high considering how many teams are looking for depth and someone with a cap hit of $1.35 million.
