Are the Vancouver Canucks in a strong position to land them a second-line center?
Donnie & Dhali: Rick Dhaliwal and Don Taylor discuss the possibility of the Vancouver Canucks trading from a position of strength, with the right side up front. Can it provide them with a second-line center?
** NHLRumors.com transcription
Dhaliwal: “Do you know what Conor Garland’s name is? Patrick Johnson, Donnie, The Province, he said this weekend that Conor Garland’s name is there. I did some research on this and someone told me, this looks like Jimmy Rutherford, Don, playing Whack-a-Mole. I’ve never played Whack-a-Mole. You said you did.”
NHL Rumors: Will Ryan O’Reilly be traded at or before the deadline?
Taylor: “How is that possible?”
Dhaliwal: “I had to Google ‘Whack-a-Mole’. Was it at the PNE?”
Taylor: “Ryan used to be able to play it, but apparently not anymore.”
Dhaliwal: “Okay. Anyway, forget Whack-a-Mole.”
Where are the Canucks loaded, Don? On the right. Boeser, Garland, Sherwood, you have a young child, (Jonathan) Lekkerimaki.
Taylor: “(Linus) Karlsson too.”
Dhaliwal: “Karlsson, Lekkerimaki, their strength is on the right. They don’t want to trade…”
Taylor: “Do they have a power?”
Dhaliwal: “They don’t have, well, apparently it’s on the right side. They don’t want to trade the first one, or Lekkerimaki or (Braeden) Cootes, or whoever the other one is, (Tom) Willander.”
Could Garland get you, so the Canucks are thinking, can Garland get you that second-line center?
Taylor: “Oh my god.”
Dhaliwal: “You never know, Don. It’s Whack-a-Mole. It’s thinking about everything outside the box. Put Sherwood and Garland out there and see if you can get a center.”
Taylor: “They just extended Garland.”
Dhaliwal: “His no-move will not take effect until next year.”
Taylor: “If you’re talking about trading Garland for a high draft pick in the first round, in the first round. Not even high. Yeah, okay, sure.”
Dhaliwal: “Well.”
Taylor: “Second line in the middle?”
Dhaliwal: “Second-line center. Can Garland do it? They are loaded on the right. You always act from a strong position…”
Taylor: “To get a high draft pick.”
Dhaliwal: “To get a second-line center. The other one for you is this one, Sherwood. What do you do with him, Don?”
Taylor: “UFA at the end of the season.”
Dhaliwal: “There are, there are, there have been no contract talks. No numbers have been crunched. It’s just a matter of waiting. The Canucks aren’t going to get them for $3 million. And I’ll tell you this right now, his number starts with a five. Take that to the bank. I said this a while ago, and everyone’s telling me, it’s going to start with a five, Don.”
But anyway, how do you get the center of the second line? You’re dealing with your power position, which is the right side. You go from there.”
Taylor: “So they’re trying to save the season, right?”
Dhaliwal: “Absolutely, are you kidding me? Do you think they woke up this morning and had a big meeting about a renovation?”
Taylor: “Like they trade Conor Garland for a second-line center, who may or may not help them. They may need a first-line center, yes. But the reaction to this from his fan base will be one of disgust. It will be like we’re trying to do this again. If you’re going to trade, if you’re going to let go of Kiefer, Kiefer Sherwood, who has been excellent, as has Connor Garland.”
NHL Rumors: Canucks, Flames, Oilers, Blues, Blackhawks, Mammoth and Predators
Dhaliwal: “Both.”
Taylor: “Rebuild.”
