NHL Rumors: Columbus Blue Jackets complicated the trade market

Daily confrontation: David Pagnotta on The Sheet with Jeff Marek on the Columbus Blue Jackets and their winning streak that has put them in the playoff hunt and therefore complicated the trade market.

Marek: “But how much is this, this is a good one for you. How much do you think this Columbus winning streak has thrown a wrench into the market? Because a lot of us thought that by now, like they were going to keep losing and fall out.”

And you know, like you and I were talking about whether Boone Jenner or Charlie Coyle went to the Edmonton Oilers. And, you know, help create a third line. Which one is Stan Bowman, we naturally assume, trying to work with the Oilers there. How much of this winning streak is complicating everything right now, Dave?

Edmonton Oilers enter the Olympic break looking for answers

Pagnotta: “It is and it isn’t. Because they, like Waddell and company, thought this was the team, I mean, not at this level, not on how well they’ve done, with (Rick) Bowness behind the bench, and that’s not sustainable. But they thought they were a much better team than they had shown in the first part of the season.”

And they believed that what they had on paper would reflect their overall performance, but that wasn’t the case, and they needed to make a change. And now that Bones comes in, it’s a looser room. There is more communication. There was some talk that, you know, maybe the players started tuning out Evanson, and that’s why they ended up going this way. But things have certainly changed.

They feel like they are a playoff team. But at the same time, if they can’t sign (Erik) Gudbranson, Jenner and Coyle, or at least don’t feel confident, or there’s a risk of them going to free agency, then I think Waddell is going to look at the market and see what’s available to them.

Whether it’s Edmonton or, you know, LA is looking for a center. Are they heading in Coyle’s direction? There are other teams that want to take advantage of, you know, the rest of their club, reward their club, I should say, by adding something to it. So whether it’s Dallas or Columbus or, excuse me, Colorados. Carolina in the East, other teams, Tampa, Montreal, etc.

There’s a lot of teams that are looking to make moves, and they want to, they’re curious to see, ‘Hey, is Coyle available? Is Jenner available? Can we go this way?

So I think Columbus, again, thinks this is the team they’ve put together that can compete for a playoff spot. So they are comfortable with that. But can they sign these guys at the same time? Mason Marchment, another one.”

Marek: “It’s interesting. It’s no surprise, you know, Rick Bowness coming in. Seven games they’ve only given up thirteen shots and thirteen goals. As we should have seen coming, that this team would immediately tighten up defensively. I’m very curious to see what Columbus does.”

NHL Rumors: Utah Mammoth and the Toronto Maple Leafs

When they come in, we’ll be talking about Artemi Panarin here in a minute. The same thing happened with Panarin in Columbus. And (Sergei) Bobrovsky, you know, treat them like their own mercenaries. It was important for the organization to get over the hump, playoffs, etc. And it certainly worked in that first round against the Tampa Bay Lightning. But in the end, those guys ended up going for nothing.”
