Artemi Panarin may prefer an extension trade
Sportsnet: Elliotte Friedman and Kyle Bukauskas on 32 Thoughts: The Podcast – The Penguins’ Impressive Sweep episode, about the New York Rangers and incoming UFA Artemi Panarin. Panarin holds the hammer with a no-movement clause and an extension preference.
** NHLRumors.com transcription
Friedman: “There’s a number of teams that are doing their due diligence on Panarin, both on and off the ice, and they’re looking into him. And Ducks, I think, is one of them. There’s a clear connection there, Joel Quenneville.
Bukauskas: “Yes. I say one is running, one of many. Or do you think they are the leading candidate at the moment?”
Friedman: “I don’t. I don’t want to go there right now because I just don’t know Kyle. I don’t know who the leading candidate is. I’ll be honest. Like me, I just want to be transparent with everyone. I don’t know who the leading candidate is.”
NHL Rumors: Artemi Panarin signed for roster management as he awaits a trade
You know, for starters, he has a huge say in it. And for another, you know, like I said, I think the Rangers are trying to get Brock Nelson, the deal was Calum Ritchie, a first-round pick, a conditional third. There was a player who went with Nelson, and Oliver Kylington also went to the Islanders. But that’s the kind of return they’re looking for here.
I think the other thing applies here too, and I believe it more now: I think Pan Panarin’s preference is for an extension. I think there are a number of teams he could potentially go to as a loanee.
Like one of the teams I’ve heard that might be interested in as a rental is Dallas. And I think, you know, the thing about Dallas is that their ability to do anything with the term probably depends on their decision with Jason Robertson, right? And so I think that becomes the question. I think that’s Dallas at the moment, until they figure out what happens with Robertson long term, we’ll see. You know, if they’re a long-term player somewhere.
But Anaheim, they can, they could easily make a Nelson-like deal with the Rangers. Washington. I think that could be possible too. I’ve heard Washington prefers an extension. You know, all of a sudden, the Capitals after a hugely entertaining game Saturday in Edmonton that they unfortunately couldn’t keep.
You know, the Capitals are one of those teams too. You know, they’re five points away from the wildcard. However, teams like them, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Columbus, have the Islanders in third place in the Metro, right there at number 59. So those teams that are in the Metro may have two opportunities: the wild card shot and the Metro shot.
You know, those teams chasing in the Atlantic, Detroit and Tampa, have a really good lead, and Buffalo has a little bit of room, although not that much. At this point, you would certainly think those Metro teams would have the advantage going into the playoffs in terms of how many options they could have.
NHL Injuries: Ducks, Avs, Blue Jackets, Oilers, Islanders, Rangers, Flyers, Lightning and Canucks
But I think the Capitals would do it with an extension, possibly they could do it. You know, I had a lot of interesting responses to my LA theory on Friday, from absolutely they should do it, to, you know, I’ll tell you this. I think the Kings are asking themselves some pretty honest questions.
…
But I think the Kings are asking themselves some pretty tough questions, and one of them is: does it make sense for them to give up their future and prospects? Now, I think you know if you’re comfortable trading for Panarin, him with an extension, I think that’s different.
But again, you know, as someone said to me, what does that extension look like? If it was, if it was two times $10 (million), Kyle, or two times $12 (million), I think there would be a lot of people jumping for it. Once you start reaching four years, maybe five, some people will start to get nervous.
But you know, my theory about the Kings was that I think they’re asking themselves some pretty tough questions about who they are and where they’re going, and I really believe that’s true.
I always assume there are teams I’m not aware of. People said, should he go to Vegas? Vegas joins in with everyone. Would you go to Carolina? Carolina gets involved with everyone. You know, a lot of people wonder what Minnesota is. I’m getting very mixed messages about Minnesota for Panarin. I have people who think: yes, but I also have other people who say: that doesn’t happen, as if it just doesn’t happen.
NHL Rumors: What type of contract is Artemi Panarin looking for and who is interested?
So we’ll see. We have an idea of what the Rangers want. We have an idea who’s in there. We have an idea who might consider it without an extension. And then we have another question about what that expansion looks like.”
