The New York Rangers will not offer Artemi Panarin a contract extension

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman: The New York Rangers have released a statement saying they are rebuilding and not rebuilding. According to sources, General Manager Chris Drury met individually with the team leaders and then with the team as a whole.

Sources added that Artemi Panarin has been told that he will not receive an extension offer from the Rangers, and that they will work with his agent, Paul Theofanous, to facilitate a trade to wherever he wants to go, if possible.

Johnston: “Well, Panarin, the Rangers are getting closer by the day, I mean, they’re at the bottom of the conference as we record this, to where they, you know, I think they’re going to have to commit more fully to being sellers.

Panarin has full control here, so there is still a conversation to be had with his agent and where he could play. But you know, you can start looking at places that make sense. You know, places where there might be other Russian players. You know, he’s got to be the most impactful potential player, you know, available, or expected to become available.

But you know, it’s hard to know what he wants. Is he, can he want to move on? Does he just play this out and head straight to free agency? I mean, that’s still not entirely clear. I don’t, I don’t think Rangers have reached the point where they’re completely selling them anymore. But it’s clear the hawks are circling a bit. That it’s pretty clear that the Rangers, you know, the season has been rough there, and they need kind of their own little restart, so to speak.

And so, you know, I don’t think the contract discussions that I was having with Panarinn were going anywhere that quickly early in the season. So it is not likely that there will be an expansion at this time. And he’s going to get another big money deal, I believe.

And so, you know, that’s kind of how things stand. It’s just, only he knows where else he could play this season. Like where he would back out of a trade. And I think that will become a little clearer over time.

Mackenzie: “By the way, and feel free to tell me otherwise. When you said the hawks are circling, you meant that teams in general are circling, not Chicago.

Johnston: “Yes, I meant, like other people, that the seagulls are circling, and not which ones. I just want to be clear,
because the aggregators there might hear something different.
