Newcastle United lost 2-1 to Brighton on Saturday afternoon, as you undoubtedly know.
I couldn’t attend the game today, but watched the game online.
United started well but lost their way a bit as Brighton played well and dominated the first half.
As the second half progressed, Newcastle improved significantly and Brighton struggled to cope as the match progressed.
Woltemade scored a fantastic goal and from then on it looked like United would take all three points. Only for a rare break at the other end and when Dan Burn made an excellent block the ball fell so sweetly that Welbeck hit the winner.
I thought the referee was very generous to Brighton and there were some rubbish free-kicks against Big Nick, while NUFC were also not lucky at all when it came to balls falling kindly in and around the penalty area.
After Brighton scored the winner towards the run of play, I knew what would happen after the game.
Some overblown nonsense from the usual suspects.
We all hate Newcastle United losing a game, but at the same time you have to take several things into account before you open your mouth. Or at least you should.
Among the other responses I read online that had me shaking my head, this one was on The Mag in the immediate response from several contributors. GShow saying ‘…and then lost to teams like the mighty Brighton.’
Teams like the mighty Brighton…
This is typical of the thinking behind many of the crazy comments I’ve read in response to today.
Maybe a lot of these dafties are like me, many years under their belt and they used to be a nothing club. Apart from four seasons in the early 1980s, Brighton has never been in the top flight in its entire history.
It seemed that they were forgotten, disappeared, without a stadium and what ultimately seemed to be no club.
Then their sugar daddy Tony Bloom put in half a billion and paid for a new stadium and training complex and paid for the players to get them into the Premier League and stay there.
To be fair he has also hired some excellent people on the football and business side and has been ruthless in selling players to make a profit BUT also to spend a lot of money.
Last season, Brighton spent more on signings than any other Premier League club, almost a quarter of a billion!
Yet people talk about the ‘mighty Brighton’ to belittle them, or use phrases like ‘teams like Brighton’, as if they were still that club that lived in the second, third and fourth tier at the time and was a nothing club, a nothing team.
Things change, though, Grandpa.
It’s like last season when Newcastle lost twice to Bournemouth, many NUFC fans are wondering how this could happen. Even if they did draw at Bournemouth this season, it was considered a bad result by many, even though they have won their other three PL home games this season and have not lost since their opening day misfortune when they lost late at Anfield.
Bournemouth and Brighton are now good teams, with wealthy owners and in many ways well run. They are competitive.
Brighton defeated Man City on home field in the Premier League this season, and also on home field last season.
Brighton have won twice at home to Liverpool in the past three seasons.
Brighton have won twice and drawn once in their last four PL visits to Arsenal.
Brighton regularly beat Chelsea home and away, and they do the same at Man U.
Look at how Newcastle and Brighton have done over the past four seasons, league position and points.
2021/22 Newcastle 11th and 49 points, Brighton 9th and 51 points
2022/23 Newcastle 4th and 71 points, Brighton 6th and 62 points
2023/24 Newcastle 7th and 60 points, Brighton 11th and 48 points
2024/25 Newcastle 5th and 66 points, Brighton 8th and 61 points
Brighton are a top eight club, I would say now, based on recent seasons. There is no shame in losing to the ‘mighty’ Brighton.
When we qualified for the Champions League both seasons it could easily have been Brighton, but they ran out of steam a bit late.
They don’t have any European distractions this season and with a really good young manager I think they will be back in the top eight.
Give some respect.
