With just two weeks and two friendly matches for the season to go to the start of their Premier League season, Eddie Howe is confronted with a decent dilemma.
Does his Newcastle United Squad just have enough players to compete on four fronts during the 2025/26 campaign?
After you have lost people like Sean Longstaff and Callum Wilson, and Alexander Isak is still a ‘perhaps’ after exit -links, it is somehow a weaker team compared to what we had during last season’s opening weekend.
So howhe and the recruitment team are planning to be very busy for the next two weeks, with a few large additions planned …
According to the I’s Mark Douglas, Newcastle is planning to sign at least one new striker, right-sided central back and midfielder for the opening day against Aston Villa.
The club sees the next week as a ‘moving week’ in particular for the hunt for a new striker, while conversations continue with both RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Yoane Wissa from Brentford.
There is still a quiet whisper about Atalanta star Giorgio Scalvini, as well as new reports that we are again interested in singing Palace Captainmarc Guehi.
But the pursuit of a new midfielder is particularly interesting, because Douglas immediately mentions a championshiper as one that we monitor.
“It is, however, understood that further checks have been carried out on Jack Rudoni from Coventry City as a possible replacement for Sean Longstaff.”
It would be a big leap for the 24-year-old to fill the shoes of Longstaff, now he is at Leeds United, but he is certainly more than able to develop into a top midfielder under Howe.
Hypothetically, as a Newcastle fan at the start of the window it was told that they had brought five new players in the summer, they would have been ecstatic.
With the advantage of retrospect, that may still not be enough for how to satisfy that he and the team of the team are going far in as many competitions as possible this season.
The Premier League and Champions League XI choose themselves, but a criminal lack of quality and depth beyond the starting XI could soon turn out to be such a big problem as back in the 2023/24 campaign.
To save at least something from this current window, three new additions must be seen as an absolute minimum. And if Alexander Isak is leaving this month, you could claim that we only need at least three attackers to fit his goalscoring output.
