Newcastle 2 Everton 3 match reviews and commentaries on all Newcastle United players

We asked Davey Hat-Trick to give us his match ratings and player commentary after Newcastle 2 Everton 3.

That was a bad, bad performance from Newcastle. We were deservedly beaten by Everton, who defended well and attacked sharply at times.

I don’t know what was wrong with the team in the first half. Maybe they were distracted by Champions League success, maybe they were tired, maybe they assumed Everton would be a fraud, but for the most part they were flat and predictable. Ninety percent of the time I knew what they were going to do before they did it, and if I did, I’m sure a well-drilled team like Everton did too.

The worst thing you can do against a defensive team like Everton is let them go ahead by a goal, but we did that when we failed to defend a corner. Somehow we got ourselves into trouble again and immediately gave in again. It was another defensive mistake.

We were better in the second half, especially after the introduction of Murphy and Barnes, but Everton won every header, blocked every shot and crowded us repeatedly.

Yet we drew level for the second time, only to concede again immediately afterwards through another defensive horror show.

Too many Newcastle players were not there in this match and on this form we are nowhere near qualifying for any of the European competitions. The record shows that of our last six Premier League games we have won one and lost five, and that is relegation form. Man United will be licking their lips.

Nick Pope 5

Dropped an absolute stunner for Everton’s second goal and was static for the other two. Not his day.

Kieran Trippier6

I thought he was decent, he was certainly more combative than many and showed more urgency than some of his teammates.

Malick Thiaw5

Struggled. Was expropriated a few times and outwitted a few more times.

And burn 5

About the same as Thiaw. Felt uncomfortable when Everton attacked and looked frustrated.

Lewis room 7

One of our better artists.

Caught Everton’s third goal and made one or two desperate tackles.

But at least he tried to get things going on the left.

Sandro Tonali 7

Took responsibility – tried to get the ball as much as possible and used it better than most.

Hit an absolute rocket of a shot that looked like it would restore parity but Pickford managed to tap it onto the crossbar.

Furthermore, his best efforts were not rewarded.

Jacob Ramsey 7

Our best player in the first half, although there were very few candidates.

Moved around the field and rarely lost possession or hit a bad pass.

Came out for the second half, looked like he was about to vomit so was hastily replaced. Shame.

6. Joelinton

The referee wasn’t happy with Joelinton from the start, so he gave a foul every time our man came near an Everton player. Of course, they hit the deck when he did, and the referee kicked it every time.

When Joe had the ball he looked quite good, but he got frustrated and we didn’t see the best of him.

Anthony Elanga 4

There is a lot of goodwill towards Elanga on Tyneside but this was yet another disappointing display.

He seemed reluctant to take on his man and didn’t get a single decent cross.

Nick Woltemade4

There is a player in Woltemade, but we have not consistently found him.

He’s had some good games lately, but this was one of his worst.

As soon as he received the ball – in his new midfield-like role – Everton players swarmed around him and took it away from him.

An ineffective display.

Anthony Gordon6

People around me gave AG pelters and he wasn’t at his best.

He was also responsible for Everton’s turnover that led to their third goal.

But he was moved from post to post – centre-forward, left wing, right wing, and in my opinion he did well.

SUBS

Joe Willock5

I came in for the stricken Ramsey and was a mixture of good and bad.

He carried the ball well, I thought, but he held the ball too long (not entirely his fault) and some of his passing was poor (as were almost all of his teammates).

Jacob Murphy7

Scored a nice goal and played with more purpose than Elanga.

I finished right back again, but still came forward to try to influence things.

Harvey Barnes7

It made a difference when he arrived.

Drove into Everton’s defense time and time again and seems to have developed a good rapport with Lewis Hall.

We looked more threatening with him on the field.

Yoane Wassa 5

Had no impact on the game coming off the bench.

Because Everton defended so deeply and in numbers, he received very little service.

William Osula N/A (not active long enough to review)

Only on for the final knocking.
