Newcastle 2 Brentford 3 and match ratings and commentaries on all Newcastle United players

2 minutes, 17 seconds Read

We asked Mark Jankowski to give us his match ratings and player commentary after Newcastle 2 Brentford 3.

Pope 6

I’m not sure he could have done more to keep out Brentford’s winner, but otherwise he had little to do and was authoritative with the long throws and crosses.

Trippier 4

Released again with his death and his legs are gone.

He might need 60 minutes before he looks out of his depth.

Thiaw 6

His pace and composure at the back helped us on more than one occasion.

One of the few players who can walk away with some credit today.

Botman 5

A nice header gave us the lead, but we lost too many battles with Thiago.

Ultimately, his weak header under pressure gave Brentford the winner.

Hall 5

One of his weaker performances.

Wasn’t terrible, but after some initial encouraging efforts down the left he didn’t contribute much and gave the ball away unnecessarily at times. Still England’s best left back.

Bruno 6

He has a bonus point because he handled our penalty well, but he didn’t look as sharp as he has all season.

Delivered some excellent balls into the box from set pieces.

Tonal 5

Walked through the game.

I needed more from him today.

Willock 6

I actually thought Willock was one of the more dangerous players in the first half and was a little disappointed to see him go.

I was happy to see the tactical change, but felt Willock’s performance was decent enough.

Murphy4

Everything was so bad from Murphy today.

I couldn’t understand why Eddie Howe didn’t start Elanga after his confidence-boosting goal in midweek. I’ll probably never get the chance to know why Murphy played.

Warning 5

So disappointed with Wissa today.

I’m still a fan of our number 9, have been for a few seasons, but apart from a nice little exchange to release Elanga and Trippier for a counter-attack, he wasn’t in the game.

Barnes 5

He had an excellent view of the goal early on, but otherwise I felt like he was at his best today.

Subs

The garden

I was surprised he didn’t start today and that he wasn’t helped by coming into the game when Brentford were deeper.

His speed on the break and his teasing cross earned us the penalty.

Woltemade 5

I knew he was probably going to have a period this season where he struggled in front of goal.

Unfortunately, this comes at a time when the team as a whole is struggling to become fluent in the language, making his struggles even more noticeable.

Osula 5

Some direct high energy running.

He had a lot of trouble, but little to show it.
