Newcastle 1 Wolves 0 – Saturday, September 13, 2025 3 p.m.
What a difference makes a goal!
We needed Nick Pope to make two good saves in the first minute while wolves flew out of the blocks. But what a nightmare could have been converted into a dream debut when Big Nick Woltemade started to repay the £ 65 million investment with a classic header after 29 minutes of hectic action.
Even before his goal, BNW had shown a lot with his link and determination. Yes, he has great feet for a 6ft 6incher.
Jacob Murphy should have bury an earlier chance of a short distance that blocked Sam Johnstone and our late floral gem also went close with two powerful efforts from outside the box.
His cross for the first goal was reminiscent of his assists for a former United Striker who, to quote Eddie Howe, chose to play for another club. Let’s hope that Murphy/Woltemade partnership is even more fertile.
Sandro Tonali hit a low ride of the pole just before the interval. Two-zero would probably have closed the deal against opponents who seemed to be emptied as a pierced band as soon as we took the lead. We kept dominating after the interval, but did not get the best out of decent approach play.
BNW and Joelinton were replaced by a well -deserved standing ovation by Will Osula and Joe Willock after 65 minutes. Wolves made three replacements and gathered in all four bookings of a card-happily incompetent ref, while offering almost nothing in the second half.
The game became incoherent, with two more wolves subs that were delivered for the last 12 minutes. That seemed to galvanize without producing a major threat. Anthony Elanga replaced a wrong Harvey Barnes on the left after 82 minutes. Does either start on Thursday evening? Will Sven Botman, who was introduced in a stopping time instead of the excellent Murphy?
A united player who looks irreplaceable is Tonali, who was better than anyone else on the field.
On the other side of the spectrum, Chris Kavanagh, who upset both teams and all the coaches with officials from bad to worse.
A late, late free kick admitted by Bruno Guimaraes, who was booked, was deflected for a corner that did nothing.
One Woltemade goal, three points, job done.
