Hockey New Zealand is proud to announce the winners of the Vantage Black Sticks Annual Awards 2025. An annual celebration recognizing individual excellence, professionalism and contribution within Hockey New Zealand’s high-performance environment.
These awards recognize players who have consistently demonstrated exceptional performance, leadership and commitment throughout the international season (October 2024 – September 2025). Representing New Zealand at the highest level requires significant sacrifice and discipline, and these awards highlight those who have set the standard both on and off the field.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR – CHARLIE MORRISON
Morrison’s rise through the ranks of the Black Sticks has been nothing short of impressive. Throughout the 2025 season, he showed world-class consistency, elite defensive skills and growing leadership within the group.
“Charlie has been one of our most consistent and influential players this year. His defensive performances have been world-class and he continues to grow as a leader both on and off the field. He sets high standards, mentors younger players and consistently performs at a level that moves the team forward.” (from the player group).
PLAYER OF THE YEAR – GRACE O’HANLON
O’Hanlon’s performance in 2025 was nothing short of outstanding. From back-to-back shootout wins at the Nations Cup and Oceania Cup to her steady leadership behind the defensive line, she continues to set the benchmark for hockey excellence in New Zealand.
“Grace has delivered world-class performances throughout the season. Her leadership, composure and competitive edge have transformed the team’s belief and standards. She inspires those around her and consistently delivers when it matters most. A true reflection of what it means to be a Black Stick.” (from the player group).

The Vantage Black Sticks Annual Awards include three main categories:
Player of the Year (Staff Vote) – Recognition of consistent high performance, professionalism and leadership throughout the season.
Player of the Year (player vote) – Awarded by teammates to the individual who best exemplifies excellence, impact and consistency.
Team Values Award (combined voting) – Honoring the player who best represents the team’s culture, dedication and values.
These awards celebrate not only athletic achievement, but also the qualities that define what it means to represent New Zealand.
