NHL Rumors: 10 Trade Destinations for Artemi Panarin
Ron MacLean: “Let’s talk headlines and the New York Rangers, starting with Artemi Panarin.”
Elliotte Friedman: “So he’s obviously the name that everyone’s kind of focused on right now. And if you’ll recall, Brock Nelson was traded from the Islanders to Colorado last year, and the trade was for Cal Richtue, a first-rounder and a conditional third. There are other players involved, but those were the key pieces. And it sounds like that’s the Rangers starting point with Panarin right now.”
Part of this is also, will he be willing to sign an extension? Are there places? He has a no-move clause, so he decides where he goes. But I think some teams are wondering if there could be an expansion as part of this.
I think some teams are looking around Anaheim. Panarin has a history with Joel Quenneville. I think LA has to make some decisions about their overall situation, where they are now and where they really are as a franchise, and what an expansion would look like.
NHL Rumors: New York Rangers – Panarin, Trocheck, Soucy, Schneider and Zibanejad
I think Washington has an extension, and I think there are a lot of other teams. I always admit to Ron that I miss teams doing this, but I think that’s where the market starts. The trade talk begins and some teams are trying to figure out what Panarin is willing to do.
MacLean: “How can LA know their two points? Right?”
Friedman: “Yes, but I think sometimes you also have to be honest about where you are and where you’re going. And I think this year in LA they’re looking at: where are we and where are we going.”
NHL Rumors.com Note: Friedman mentions LA on the 32 Thought Podcast. This is the second time the kings are mentioned. Fourth Period forwards Dennis Bernstein and Dave Pagnotta mentioned the Kings as a possible landing spot for Artemi Panarin. The question is whether the Kings are a playoff team this season and what their direction will be once Anze Kopitar retires.
NHL Rumors: Would Artemi Panarin’s Return Be Disappointing?
Not to mention what the extension looks like. Since Panarin believes he can play anywhere between 38 and 39, he could get a four or five-year extension. Friedman guessed on the podcast that it could last four years at $12.5 million per season, or five years at $10 million. Who among the Washington Capitals, Colorado Avalanche, Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks and others is up for that?
But Friedman confirmed reports that the New York Rangers are looking to acquire at least three pieces in a trade for Panarin.
