New York/New Jersey cancels ‘unaffordable’ World Cup FanFest – Inside World Football

February 22 – The New York and New Jersey World Cup Host Committee has canceled the planned World Cup FanFest at Liberty State Park in Jersey City.

Announced in February 2025, FanFest was billed as a major hub, open to all 104 matches of the tournament. Tickets, priced at $10, went on sale in December.

Instead, the organizers pivot. In a statement on Friday, the commission said an “extensive network of fan zones and community celebrations in 21 New Jersey counties will serve as a cornerstone of the region’s official fan engagement program.”

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill followed this shift by announcing a $5 million initiative to fund community-based World Cup projects.

Jersey City officials called the decision inevitable. “The Governor made the right decision. It became increasingly clear that there was no workable, cost-effective way to manage the influx of tens of thousands of fans to Liberty State Park while maintaining access to Jersey City community members,” communications director Nathaniel Styer wrote.

The cancellation comes just four months before kick-off. Fans who have already purchased passes will reportedly receive a refund.

The New York region has faced several challenges in hosting soccer festivals this summer.

Plans for a FanFest at Corona Park in Queens fizzled out. A revised plan now places events at the US Tennis Association’s Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, with a separate fan village planned for Rockefeller Center from July 4 to 19.

Fan fests with giant screens have been a regular part of every men’s World Cup since 2006. But 2026 is different. FIFA runs the tournament itself, rather than relying on a traditional local organizing committee. Host committees have limited commercial flexibility, limited to sponsorship categories not yet controlled by FIFA, while still shouldering a large portion of operational and security costs.

The question is, is New York/New Jersey the canary in the coal mine? With costs soaring and no direct financial support from FIFA for fan festivals, will other host cities follow suit? Unofficial sources suggest FanFest in downtown Seattle could be the next to be abandoned. If so, the inevitable question becomes: how many cities are now willing to afford the World Cup experience without FIFA footing the bill?
