The efforts stem from feedback collected by the House Subcommittee on Housing, which sought input from local authorities in ways to reduce bureaucracy in federal housing programs.
“When Mountain View shared their idea, I grabbed the opportunity to flourish this idea in the congress,” said Liccardo – referring to the city in his district that is recommended to expand CDBG flexibility. “As mayor of San Jose, I saw first -hand how cities are forced to get the home crisis the federal money to match the size. Reduced restrictions on the use of CDBG funds by municipalities will help us to meet the growing needs of our communities faster.”
Mountain View, California, officials said that the city has five affordable housing projects in its pipeline that can benefit from the change.
Flood said that the measure would also help communities in its state.
“The CDBG program has long been an important tool for Nebraska cities to finance important local projects,” he said. “This targeted legislation would give communities throughout the state the flexibility to use CDBG dollars to tackle the needs of the housing facility immediately.”
The bill has a support from the American conference of mayors” National Association of Provinces” National League of Cities and other national housing organizations.
Other current affordable home initiatives
Federal and regional leaders create additional efforts to tackle the affordable housing shortage of the nation through new financing, tax stimuli and streamlined regulations.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said this week that the administration is planning to roll out additional measures aimed at tackling the affordability of homes in the coming weeks as part of what Trump calls a ‘national housing case’.
Recent rules also accelerate the permit, encourage energy -efficient construction and reused surplus federal land and buildings for affordable houses.
