Losing socks is so universal that people share sock saving tips online. But the days of being left with just one sock in a pile of clean laundry may be coming to an end.
The new Whirlpool top load washing machine features a delicate basket that sits in the center of your machine, protecting sweaters and other delicate items from the hard pounding of a standard wash load. Not only is the basket designed to safely store delicate fabrics, but it is also designed to keep socks in one place so you can easily match them when it’s time to fold.
The basket can be removed to collect your delicates or left out for a wash that doesn’t require it.
I saw the soon to be released machine at KBIS in Orlando. A few weeks earlier I had ruined one of my favorite sweaters by machine washing it, so the feature won me over. The idea is so simple and clever, yet this seems to be the first washing machine to incorporate this.
Although we couldn’t see the machine in action yet (it was just on display), a Whirlpool rep told me that clothes placed in the center basket stayed there for the entire cycle, thanks to the clear water flow patterns.
The basket can be easily removed by gently squeezing the handles, allowing you to remove your delicates and socks. You can also leave the basket outside if it is not needed for a particular washing program.
Prices were not available, but the washing machine will launch at national retailers in September this year.
